Glad I got one before the price went up...

That's a little puzzling to me. I wouldn't even consider it the most innovative camera released this year, much less one of the 50 best inventions.

i would definitely hesitate to call it an invention. it's definitely a camera type that i've thought ought to be built for a long time, not sure why it took so long for a camera company to see the niche (cost to produce?)?

i'm sure as a more consumer oriented camera it is more important to the general audience than all the ones we interchangeable lens folk get excited about.

Do you have one?

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8330/8143818251_5fc2c8effe_b.jpg

That one is at the max optical zoom.

I poo poohed it for several months. Then I saw some first hand results.

When the nex first appeared many were also unimpressed.

Obviously this is a different animal. But I defy any photog to really learn one and not be impressed. In many ways the GUI is superior to the 5n and it is more customizable.

Anyway Sony needs a break

Just to be clear, I wasn't questioning the worth of the camera as a camera, just questioning it's place on a list of the 50 best inventions. And, honestly, unless it was a camera that completely revolutionized photography as we know it and changed the way we, collectively, thought about imaging, I don't think any camera belongs on that list.

If you want to debate it being the most innovative camera of the year, I'm up for that. My vote's for the OM-D.

I agree - no matter how good it is, a consumer P&S camera is not a world changing invention. A few other things in the list are also dubious in my opinion.

I disagree. The Lytro could be on that list as an invention and is essentially a consumer P/S camera.

Should be Lytro or RX1 since it is FF.

Haha, you are guys are tough crowd, as usual.

The rx100 is to "the consumer point and shoot", what the Ford model A was to the Model T---in a vacuum

The OMD has no such corresponding leap in performance compared to the best contemporary 4/3s---or does it? Educate me

It's definitely not an invention, it's just a point and shoot camera with a new combination of previously-invented features.

Also, I think it's overrated. Yes, it has a great sensor, but based on sample photos I've seen online, the lens is nothing great, not as good as the kit lens you would get with any interchangeable lens camera.

Considering the company it's in, the RX100 is waaay out of place being mentioned.

Very cool camera, maybe one of the top 50 gadgets of the year, but not an astonishing "invention"

I think the collapsibility of the 3.6x zoom lens with an f/1.8 max aperture covering a CX format sensor is pretty impressive.

If it wasn't a difficult thing to invent, someone else would have done it by now.

Canon already invented a small camera with a collapsing zoom lens. The S90.

Sony just told its engineers to do the same thing, but make it bigger (bigger sensor, bigger lens), but still small enough.

Haha nice one Uncle Mike, thanks for making my point entirely. Sony did it in a camera ever so slightly bigger yet with larger max aperture and covering a slightly less than DOUBLE surface area sensor.

I think you guys are getting too hung up on the technology inside the camera. On a micro level it's neat what Sony did with the RX100 tech. On a macro level it's a point and shoot camera that produces nice results.

The RX1 would have made more sense to receive this honor to me (because nothing alike to it has ever been done), but still wouldn't deserve to share a spot amongst the other innovative designs there such as the open source solar water distillation unit, the motion to speech gloves, and the Tesla-S (to name a few).

They might as well have mentioned the iPhone camera instead of the RX100... at least it was used to do something ground breaking (cover photo for Time Magazine during Sandy).

Clearly, Time isn't 'hung up' enough on technology, nor the definition of...words. However, it doesn't change the fact that it's a neat little point and shoot!

By these standards there has been no invention in digital cameras since the first prototype.

Or perhaps someone cares to mention one?

also: on full auto a 5D is also "point and shoot" as is nex-7 etc.

Such a term is meaningless except as an excuse to dismiss a camera. My original nex-5 was called a P&S countless times here and elsewhere. It's an excuse for an argument--or I should say, the lack of one.

"An invention is a unique or novel device, method, composition or process. It may be an improvement upon a machine or product, or a new process for creating an object or a result. An invention that achieves a completely unique function or result may be a radical breakthrough. Such works are novel and not obvious to others skilled in the same field."

The last sentence is certainly obvious here.
