p.1 #1 · Anyone remove the AA filter on NeX?

Debating if I want to pickup a nex-6 and get this done or do this to my nex-7. I've read on the 7 it's very difficult but haven't seen actual samples.

What would be the point of buying a brand new camera and then completely invalidating the best reason to buy new (the warranty)? You can pick up used 7s for the retail price of the 6, and LifePixel will do the conversion for $400. I don't know anyone who has done this specific conversion, but a friend had them do it to a DsIII, and he was very pleased with the quality.

I've considered it doing this, but I'm perfectly happy with the prints from the 7 as-is in the largest sizes I print, so I don't really see the point in popping for the conversion.

I would get a used nex6. Mostly interested in that camera for WA RF performance.

Vivek tried it (see getdpi) but had some issues.... you could ask him. I think there was a link to some other guy who did a strip down as well...

Ah, so this isn't an immediate plan. Are you sure the 6 even has an AA? For some reason I thought it was following the 5N/F3 sensor topping design, but that could be based more on assumption than anything I've read, since I can't find the source now.

Are you sure about that, Jae? I can't find anything confirming that, and LP only offers the conversion service on the 7. I can imagine other reasons for that, but it seems odd that a search for removing the filter off the 5N turns up a little speculation, and a lot of original 5 conversions.

I'm pretty sure about it as I shot with the 5N a lot with some very sharp lenses. I never induced moire on it despite shooting a lot of cityscapes.

It's output while very good isn't quite as crystal clear as say a Ricoh GXR M module.

The GXR has more going for it than just the lack of AA. It also has a lower pixel count and off-set microlenses.

And it surprises me you weren't able to induce moire with the 5N. I had to correct it out of quite a few shots, particularly when shooting with the R 35-70/4. Actually, I could get moire out of the original 5 with the Elmarit 24 ASPH.

i have no problem producing moire with the 3 and 7 and they both have AA filters.

Hm, both ZM 18 and 35 would produce moire pretty fast on the 5N as long as the lenses are properly focused.

p.1 #13 · Anyone remove the AA filter on NeX?

I was so interested to hear that LifePixel was offering the NEX-7 AA filter, that I called them yesterday.

They said that yesterday was the first day they offered the service. They seemed very confident in doing the work, however I asked him how many they had done and he said none so far. The way I understood it, and I hope I got this right, the AA filter is part of a IR cut filter sandwich that is in-between the sensor and dust filter. It is removed and tested with a spectrometer for a custom made IR filter for as close to proper white balance as possible. The replacement filter is installed. Apparently, this has already been done. He could not confirm how accurate the white balance would be after replacement. He also said that the process is reversible, at a cost.

I would really like to know how this would affect the corners of the short register lenses, but I am evaluating the $400 it would take to find out.

Any other adventurous souls out there? I remember someone wanting to do this. Well, now the service is available.

Well I doubt it would affect the WA RF lenses much.

From what I understand, corner issues are a result of pixel density affecting what can be done with the microlenses.

This is probably why they're inventing curved sensors and the like.

So far, I've only had strongly noticeable moire on my OM-D with the Oly 50mm Macro.

on my NEX-7 pretty much all my lenses produce moire if I shoot a cityscape. I was recently testing a rokkor 58/1.2 and it gave me quite extreme moire through most of the aperture range.

Okay looked through my files and finally saw one instance of it.

Surprisingly, I actually haven't used the NEX-7 much for city scapes, almost all of it is has been for nature and portraits (because of the easy bounce flash).

I added a few more below where I think moire should have happened but didn't... this was with the Zeiss G 45mm F2.

i think you didn't get moire in the tie because you are close enough to fully resolve the fabric stitching.

the high res of the NEX-7 means you need to look for smaller periodic patterns to provoke moire (compared to whole frame) than you might be used to.

here is an unprocessed, near corner, 100% crop from the rokkor 58/1.2 at f/5.6 i won't bother showing the whole image because it has no aesthetic value.

I'm sending mine in on Monday. Unfortunately, I don't have any RF lens to test for before and after. I do have a borrowed Zeiss 24/1.8.

How do you figure? Used 7s are going for about $850 and the conversion's $400 + shipping. Are there M8s going for $1250 now?
