p.1 #1 · Having 24/1.4 II L and 35/1.4 L - makes sense?

Hi guys, I was wondering how many of you own both. I have 35 and I am pretty happy with it. There are times/situations in which I would prefer having more angle of view, but not sure is it worth so much extra daugh.

I understand all technicalities as I am not a novice I am just trying to justify the expense. I was looking at the Samyang 24/1.4 and all the positive reviews, but somehow don't trust it (call me snob).

I have 17-20, 28-70/2.8 and 35/1.4. (screwed on 1D MKIV and 5DII). Adding another glass that would potentially sit in my bag collecting dust is not a smart way to go. I mostly shoot portraits and weddings....And yes, i also have very sweet Oly OMD-E5 with its 12/2.0 (eq of 24mm).

Eager to hear your thoughts, I am going crazy with myself

I have both for shooting low light. I was close to having to sell my 24 to fund my 24-70II, but was able to keep it and am thankful for that. I shot a rock show Just a bit ago and it was super helpful. The only thing you need to consider is your priority for lens acquisition. Look at what your eventual ideal kit is and work twords that. Sounds like you have a lot of coverage in that range with your OMD 12 f2, 17-40 and 28-70. Do you need something longer first? 85 1.8 or 85L, 100L Macro (seems like the best fit based on your kit)? 135L? 200 1.8? Upgrade your 17-40 to 16-35 2.8? I don't know what you shoot.

I don't use canon, but I have 28, 35 and 50mm primes next to each other. Each has it own look. 50 off course a standard lens, 35 gives me a much wider look without having a real wide angle look. And the 28 is the first lens that starts giving that wide angle look.

24 and 35 are totally different. 24 is really wide angle. 35 is semi wide, almost normal. If u need the speed in the 24mm area, and u want such lens on a canon body (instead of the OMD) than having both makes a lot of sense.

I own both, too. The 35L is a wonderful focal length on FF, and sees a lot of use with my 5Dmk3, while the 24L sees less use, but works very well on my 1DmkIV, and I enjoy making videos with it, so I can't bring myself to sell it, at least not now.

Consider both Canon 24mm f/1.4 lenses. The 24 Mark II would be better for landscape because of better corners and less CA. If you intend the lens for something like PJ, however, you could save money by getting a Mark I, which is extremely sharp in the center, but doesn't get really crisp in the corners without small apertures. Also, depending on your needs, the new 24mm f/2.8 IS might be the right choice, and notably less money.

Thanks,

I am pretty much covered on the tele end (85/1.2, 85/1.8, 135/2.0, 70-200/2.8 II LIS) it's the wide angle that gives me the headache....Even more so having tried this sweet prime. Discarded 14mm because it is too wide for me. I did ponder the 16-35 II, but I have a "sweet tooth for primes", cannot help myself . Just not sure about the pragmatism of such decision. Or does it make more sense to give Samyang a try - for seldom occassions when wider angles with fast apertures is required ....But then again, you gent get much sharper and better WA prime then 24 II...(except for CZ maybe)

I would say go for it then. The samyang is going to require manual focus and I can't see focus accurately with a prime that wide at 1.4 without using live view. For my use, I need AF. It is a great lens, just specialized.
