p.2 #1 · p.2 #1 · Are the D4, D800 and D600 the same camera with different casing?

The D4 sensor is made by Renseas, the sensors of the D800 and D600 by Sony.
Sony uses a massive column parallel read-out architecture, which gives it very low readnoise at base ISO levels. The D4 has a classic multipath sequential ADC circuits.

Even if the AF module might be identical between D800 and D4, the key difference is the significant shorter blackout time the D4 is capable to deliver (due to its faster fps a requirement).

According to chipworks the D800 and D600 sensors are made in 180 nanometer chip process, the D4 in 250 nanometer.

This is how the D800 pixel structure looks like (source:chipworks)

Only thing I say is if you are concerned about hard drive space wwith D800 raw files, buy a 2 or 3 tb hard drive and add to your computer. They aren't that much money.

I do have two additional 2TB external hard drives and they are full of photos (and backups). Regarding D800 raw files what I have been doing is to keep only the ones that are excellent shots.

Please, please, please do not turn this camera forum into your own little political debate forum. I have a hard enough time getting away from that crap as it is.

of course not, just making the point that KR lives in an alternate reality.....that's all

btw, I don't agree with him at all......all three FX cameras are very different from each other, they share a few parts but not enough to call them "the same camera".

A much better analogy is that he's the Consumer Reports of camera equipment. Like CR, his advice is only useful to those with very little knowledge of the product and who tend to have very basic needs. I'm sure he understands that advanced users can see he's full of baloney, but that's the price of making a good living as a crank.

I love his articles and comments. If you fail to see his irony and humour, yes, I understand your comment, but if you read between the lines, you will realise he is telling the truth more often than most other.

The D4, D800 and D600 ARE the same, for most people and for most situations.

Same?
.
My experience/observation. I have a D50 and a D90 and they can both use the d90 battery so you would think the battery door would be the same. They are NOT.
.
If you can't even use a simple battery door across models I have little faith of the design engineer using much commonality except where he absolutely has to --- lens and flash mount/interface.
.
Most manufactures would not be able to use so many unique parts that are so near to each other in form/fit and performance unless they were getting huge margins. Cameras are not a commodity so I guess they are okay.

Yes, the D600, D800, and D4 are all the same cameras. I think people have finally caught on to Nikon's scheme. I knew there was something fishy going on. Thank you for pointing this out Mr. Rockwell. You are my hero.

I just hope that KR doesn't expose the fact the ALL Nikon cameras are made by Canon. They just put the Nikon name on them to avoid being called a monopoly.......

The same? pick up a D4, a D800 and D600, you can easily tell the D4 uses much better grade lead

Thanks, AndreasE for the diagrams, not that I understand them. Now I realize though that the sensors are different. Not that I would buy a D4. I would be perfectly happy with a D 700, but they are hard to find.
