Quick question for D800 users, if you put a lens on the camera does the camera force you to use the format that the camera is or is it user selectable? Can I put my 80-200 on it and select DX mode for some extra FPS?
Yes. But you will need the grip with AA batteries and or the D4 battery to get the 6 FPS. If you set it to 1.2 crop you will get 5 FPS with or without the grip.

And that adds $500 to the price. .
NO. The grip is $397, the battery is $146, the battery chamber cover is $28 and the charger is $309. A lot more than $500.

That is what I do when I need to shoot fast and it is almost full frame. And it works OK.

WTF was Nikon thinking with this grip disaster?
You view it as a disaster....I'm willing to bet NIkon does not. Despite the issues associated with people complaining about the cost of the grip and the left autofocus issue, consumers are still buying this camera.
If Nikon truly viewed this as a disaster there would have been more of a substantial discount on the overall price of the grip comparable to what we have seen in the past.
IMHO I believe NIkon elected to price this grip at a premium because they knew their customer base would go crazy over a 36 MP monster. Nikon knew they had a window of opportunity to charge a premium on the grip prior to the third party manufacturers introducing their grips to the market. Once the third party grips hit the market, NIkon lowered the price....but it's still higher than most folks would like to pay. And evidently that does not concern Nikon at all...which is why I stated Nikon does not believes they have a "grip disaster"/
I opted for a DSTE battery grip. It came with a 3600 mAh battery (more than the D4) and works like a charm. Sure, it's not exactly the same quality as the Nikon grip. But it only set me back $94 for the grip and battery. The feel of it is great, and it gives me all of the functionality that I need.

$1,000+ to put a grip on the D800 to get it's max FPS is a disaster.

The D800 was not designed for speed.....
Yet, I've been using mine for just that @ a paltry 5 fps
Sans grip here. Just taking advantage of Nikon's very best AF to date. Dead serious.

a few quid more a 1 v2 with the ft1 will give you 15 fps with autofocus. sometimes you need more than one tool... 5 fps is quite a lot really, works for the monkey!

I hate what you do to me.
You don't need to spend every last cent to get 6fps. Just buy a grip (I use a 3rd party one for my D700) and use rechargable AA's. No need to buy the D4 battery and charger.

In DX mode it's as fast/faster than a D700.

We made out as good as we could have. No real problems. Fourteenth and the Battery is a different story.

Yeah...such a disaster. I'm surprised D800 sales haven't come to a complete halt.
I'm equally surprised Nikon has gone bankrupt by now.
Truly a disaster....
