p.1 #1 · Are recent iMacs still too bright?

I have a Mac Pro that is getting long in the tooth, and I would like to upgrade it. The new iMac is an interesting option that could save me several thousand dollars, but I'm concerned about monitor brightness and calibration. I want to get my brightness down to 120 so that my prints are faithful to what I see on the monitor, but I've read that some people have problems getting the brightness down to 120. Is this just on older iMacs, or does the problem persist with the newer LED-backlit monitors?

I have one of the older iMacs (last of the 24" CCFL backlights) and it's a problem. The newer post-2009 27" LED units dont have that problem.

Once the iMacs went to the 21.5" and 27" sizes this was no longer a problem. I have a 27" and was able to calibrate to 80 cdm2 with room to spare (I also have 100 and 120 calibrations).

first step is to calibrate the monitor

then it will not look too bright

That's not true. You can calibrate to any brightness you select so if you pick a wrong value a calibration isn't going to help that.

I have my 21.5 iMac (IPS Panel) calibrated at 90 cd/m2, and the brightness slider is at half way....so yeah, it'll go really dim.....
