Could the 5DIII be programmed thru firmware to focus at f/8 if Canon decided to let this happen?
Thanks
I hope so, but most likely Canon will wait until sales on 5D3 will go down. So, maybe in another year or so when people will start talking about 5D4
Fixing 1Dx on these issues before holidays season starts also good indication of not as huge lines on overpriced 1Dx. I am glad that Canon finally listen photographers and that this issue could be patched over software update.
1.) No updates for six months. Canon is saying, "Sorry, suckers."
2.) No mention of fixing the bothersome AF point illumination issue.
I've been a loyal Canon customer since 2005. The longer I stick with them, the less and less I like them.
You should switch brand immediately You complained and wish Canon did a firmware fix in another thread. When Canon say that they will make the fix. Then you complain about that

Many times, I think Canon should have just shut up and do nothing. Instead of being appreciated for having a non-pro body (other than 1D) with f/8 focusing capability, it seems some of these announcements get people upset about it.
For me, I know it's a long wait, but I paid full price for a camera that I didn't think it would be able to focus with a lens at f/8. Now, I have to think what lens to use with f/8. Maybe, a 100-400L will find a way back to my bag again to be used with a 1.4x.

Actually I predict it will be never, the old adage when it comes to software is:
'any day now' translates it will be out in a few weeks or maybe a month.
'in a few weeks' translates to a couple of months or maybe more.
anything in excess of 'two months' means either years, or vapor(ware), never.
In other words, if someone claims that a piece of software will be available in five or six months, the reality is it will either never be finished, it never existed to begin with, or it may resurface in some different form in a number of years.
If f/8 autofocus is possible, we'll probably see a ML firmware that implements it long before Canon does.

It's good to see Lars back, the resident Canon lemming. I have owned nothing but Canon products in my entire photography career. You don't announce a "fix" and then wait 6 months to release it. That's just stupid. The mere fact Canon screwed up this AF illumination issue in the first place, and then tried to slip it past early adopters, shows their overall lack of respect for its customers. Now, you may be able to wait for 6 months, probably because you're an amateur photographer and don't need or use your camera every day. But please don't elevate your knowledge and relevance in the world of photography to such a status that permits you to understand how I shoot OR act as if you understand how those who make a living with their camera(s) should act when a vendor (i.e. Canon) behaves badly. Bulletin boards are for opining, not praising the virtues for a company that makes a product that somehow makes a person better.
I'm generally a very happy person. And I don't "whine all the time." The only significant problem I have ever complained about with regard to Canon is it's change to the way the 5D illuminates AF points. Does that make me a whiner? Does that make me someone who complains all of the time? I don't think so. Hell, I was even OK with the AF issues with the Canon EOS 1D Mark III. I never encountered the same problem others did with that camera.
So before you and your fine Scandinavian friend find it necessary to paint with a broad stroke perhaps you should learn a little more about me first.
Just out of curiosity/boredom one gloomy, overcast day I was pointing the 5D3 + Kenko 1.4X + 400/5.6 at our black cat in the living room to 'test' the AF...and I was able to get reliable AF lock repeatedly at approximately EV4 (1/60@F/8@ISO25600). Even on the back of the cat's head in a backlit situation! My former 1D3 could not achieve focus lock in this scenario with the 400/5.6 + Canon 1.4X TC.
Judging by how well my 5D3 focuses with the Kenko + 400 combo I'm actually surprised that AF@F/8 was not a feature from day 1. Maybe I could understand them leaving it out of the 5D3 for reasons of marketing/pricing distinction from the 1-series...but not sure why they would do that with the 1DX?!
Anyway..nice to see that they will be adding it back in...and that it will have cross-type sensitivity too (which the former 1-series was not...perhaps part of the reason for the performance difference).
As for the AF point illumination...I hope for those that want this feature they decide to add it in to the firmware update before the actual release. The current system does not bother me (I shot with the 7D for a while so perhaps I was acclimated to it already) but I can understand why some folks don't like it. Given the number of professional photographers who are (and will be) using this camera in poor visibility conditions it seems senseless not to address this if possible.
