Got a 24-105 f/4L IS with a fairly noisy image stabilizer with my 5D kit. Is this normal with this lens? Or did I get a bad one? It's almost like a grinding noise.
Unless you have a video with the noise level, I can't really tell you if the noise with your copy is the same as mine. I am totally satisfied by the almost-silent IS on mine, if that helps.
I guess it's ok based on these responses. It's more noticeable than the 17-55 f/2.8 I was using so it had me somewhat concerned. I'll try to post a video when I get a chance.

Mine is very quiet, can barely hear it.
Same here. Now my 24-105 is the only IS lens I have in my bag, but whenever I switch it on, I do hear the IS engage. However, I really need for one of my ears to be close to the lens to hear it.
When I first got my 24-105, I really noticed the loud IS when shooting video. I almost returned it thinking I had a bad copy. I did some research and found that the 24-105 does have loud IS and it is especially noticeable when shooting video using the built-in mic. In normal shooting you will only hear it if you put your ear up to the lens.
Here is a video where you can hear the IS in operation:
