p.1 #1 · BIF 1ds mark ii vs 5d mark iii?

All shots are now with a 500mm f4...my preference is shooting eagles and other fast sporadic animals...

I started with a 5d and the AF was not quite fast enough so I purchased a used 1ds mark ii and the keep ratio is great...but low light is hard as its an earlier series and not as good even as the 5d...

My question for those of you who own or owned both a 1ds mark ii and the new 5d mark iii is for eagles and the like in flight...is the New AF of the 5d mark iii now better than my 1dsmark ii?

2nd question how is the light rain resistance? I am used to not really worrying about the 1series or 500 in light light rain...

Thoughts from actual owners of these cameras?

Thanks,

Marc

Well not 1Ds II, but 1D II, 1D III and now 1D IV and I think 5D III is better in both normal light low light than any of them. In normal light it seems to lock a bit faster and handle lower contrast better than even 1D IV, although it's hard to quantify how much difference there is without controlled tests. It also locks pretty quick in low light and I think it works in one-shot at least below the -2EV spec. Wouldn't be using servo in very low light.

From everything I've read the 5D3 is the one. I shoot radio control events and up to the beginning of this season my go to body was a 1Ds2, with either a 7D or 1D2n as the second body, but I bought a 1D4 in the spring (not in your option list) and from everything I've read the 5D3 is a better choice for your needs.

Marc,

I did have a 1Ds Mark II for a while but as my arthritis grew I had to let it go for a 5D Mark II and not a day goes by that I don't remember that indiscretion. 1Ds-II was fantastic for my eagle shooting though the burst was pretty slow (maybe because my CF card was not one of those UDMA ones). The battery lasted for ever. With the 5D Mark II, except for center point, it was not of use for BIF. But indoor concerts and such I thought it was a touch better that the 1Ds-II. I have Mark III on the way

I also have the 7D which fills in more than nicely in the meantime.

Thanks for all of the replies! Any disadvantages, Pixel Perfect? Sritri, let me know when you get yours. I am just in the early stages of pondering this move...I keep looking at the 1DX, too but there is such a price difference

I like full frame for landscapes], hence not looking at the 1D IV.

Just because the 1D IV is not a full frame camera doesn't mean it can't take excellent landscape photos.

I understand. I have a 16-35mm though and I like having the full view without cropping or having to purchase wider lens...
