p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 20-35 f2.8L or 17-40 f4L?

I came across a 20-35 f2.8L lens for $400 that is very tempting but I cannot find a lot of information on it. I know the 17-40 is a new USM lens but an older lens doesn't scare me if the results are there. Anyone here have any history and success with the 20-35 2.8 (Not the cheaper plastic model)? And if so how would you compare the image quality to the 17-40?
Thanks!

The reviews section of this site gives rates them about the same, 8.9/10 for the 20-35 and 9.0/10 for the 17-40. I have the 20-35 and I believe it's a fine lens. Don't let the non-usm lens motor scare you away. It's really quite fast. Fast enough for a wide zoom. I do wish the 20-35 focused a little closer. It's a really well made lens with a nice feel to the zoom and focus rings. $400 is a better than fair price.--E.

Ten years ago I used to see a lot of the old EF 20-35 f2.8L on the used market. Seems to be a rare find today. I recall most of the copies I saw were pretty beat and a lot of PJs were dumping them for newer models. They are tough enough to drive nails with but probably are no longer repaired by Canon. Hopefully you don't get one that still has sand in it from the first Gulf war or Bosnia.

If you don't go with the 20-35 I know someone on here that would love it. (initials R P )

It's part of the old zoom trinity 20-35 28-80 & 80-200 . All gem lenses

Thanks for the feedback. This lens is used and shows age outside but inside its very clean. Taking some shots and then deciding on quality next. I've had the 17-40 and the 24-105 on a 7D and wasn't impressed. I've may have had bad luck with f4 Canon lenses but all my 2.8's have been great.

I must say that I had the 24-105 and was really happy with it on my 40D but wasn't happy with it on my 7D either .
I used to think that the 24mm end was wide enough for me and that as I used the long end quite a lot that the 24-105 was what I needed , and on the rare occasions 24mm was not wide enough I would have my 12-24/4 as well. But then I finally caved in and decided to try a 17-55 which was so much better than the 24-105L .

If all you shoot is crop then I would seriously give the 17-55 a look .

In addition to FM reviews, you might find this review helpful as well.

20-35 f2.8L
http://kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/20-35mm-f28.htm

I have the "plastic" version of the 20-35 and it served me well back in the 90s but it's IQ is nothing like an L; my budget couldn't afford L's back then. I shoot crop bodies like you do, a 40D and 50D, and decided on the 10-22 given it's great reviews...those reviews proved correct, it is super sharp, with little distortion.

Recently my budget found a few extra bucks and a super copy of the 17-40 became part of my kit and I really love this lens. I've only one EF-S lens and will not buy another as I'll be adding a full frame body soon. But I've not required fast zooms so far, I've left that to fast primes at f1.8 and faster.

If I need a stop faster tho, the 17-55 is the lens to think on, it's wider than the 20-35, has a larger focal length range, gets you IS, and a constant f2.8 apreture. I'm not sure you can go wrong with it, just like the 10-22 it will have a good-to-great resale value if you move to only FF.

Good luck with your selection.

I guess I should have mentioned I sold my 7D out of displeasure with it. I thought it was my lenses but after comparing shots I took with my 50D to my 7D it was the 7D. I picked up a 5D (my first full frame) and seen an immediate difference. So the 20-35 is for my 5D classic. I'd love a good 24-105 and will try again just had 2 so-so copies in the past.

If you want f/2.8, I'd suggest either the 17-35L which replaced the 20-35L, or the first generation of the 16-35L.

The 17-40L would be a much better choice if you can live with the f/4 aperture.

Even for $400, the chances of costly repairs or no parts is significant and offsets any savings.

I wouldn't worry about repairs if you receive the lens in good condition. $400 is a pretty darn good price for a really nice lens. I have the 20-35 2.8L and like it a lot. However, I am considering selling it to get the new Tamron 24-70 VC since I don't shoot wide too often.

If you do purchase it and at any point you need it cleaned or repaired you should contact KEH.com in Atlanta, GA.

It's a nice lens, but when it comes to the wide-angle I find the minimum focal distance to be a tad obnoxious

That's why I still hang on to my 24/2.8 prime. MFD is the one major downfall that the zoom has.--Eric.

I loved my 20-35, better iq than the 17-35 or v1 16-35, just mho.
Incredibly well built. 17 is a good bit wider than 20. If you can live with f4, the 17-40 is an equally
sharp lens. For me, the 20-35 would be the answer.
