This Fort was built in 1867-1869 and is part of the Dutch Water Line.
A series of water based defenses that could be used to transform the economic heartland
of the Dutch Republic almost into an island.
One weekend in the year places like this are open to public.......
Thanks for looking. Comments are always welcome.
Chris

Fascinating, Chris.
Well-documented with words AND pictures. Thanks.
Like most Americans (presumably), I never heard of these fortresses.
But they make sense because back then attacks from the sea were of primary concern.

It's interesting that they would maintain this for one weekend a year. Nice set.

Great images Chris.
Thanks for posting them, showing us the the "hidden side" of Holland.
The last is a price winner indeed.

All are interesting, but I also favor the last one. Maybe the deep shadows make it stand out.

Many thanks Charlie.
Actually the Dutch Water Line was designed to keep off enemies from the east and south (land).
They could float the land around the major cities of the time. On strategic and weak spots fortresses were build.
If you wanna know more and are in for a history lesson ...... here is the link:

Thank you Douglas.
Well, lots of things that are owned by the government fall under their rules.
