p.1 #1 · Zeiss 100MP with Nikon TC-14E II

Is it safe to mount Zeiss 100MP along with Nikon teleconverter? Does it work (is it compatible)? Couldn't find anything in searches...

Anyone with experience ?

Thanks

It doesn't fit. I am not sure if some mount surgery would fix that, or if the lens rear element and teleconverter front element would hit each other.

To be clear: the Nikon teleconverters appear to have special mounts which are slightly different than the usual mounts. I can put my 70-200/2.8 VRII on the teleconverter, but not my Nikkor 60 Micro AF-S, for example. It doesn't appear that Zeiss has chosen to enable mounting the 100MP on the TC.

You can use kenko TCs if you want.

You can always modify the TC, I did this to allow it to fit to a Sigma 500/4.5

Not sure if the Zeiss 100 will clear any obstruction from the element in the TC or rear of the lens.

Disclaimer ... you do this at your own risk

Do you know what the results are like with Kenko TCs?

I have both (MP100 and Kenko MC4). I will test the combination.

Thanks very much - that would be great.

Some different distances (MFD, 5m, infinity), a wall test, CA test. Something like that? Other tests you would like to be done?

If it's not too much trouble I'd be interested to see how it does at distant landscape or cityscape in terms of resolving detail. Then something near mfd that gave an idea of both bookeh and IQ would be good. Many thanks, Lizzie

I did some quick tests today: http://www.flickr.com/photos/universal_creations/sets/72157631792125944/
Shot in RAW, opened in LR, added lensprofile and exported to jpg.

The distance shots were focussed at the white flowers in the back.

Some observations I made: wide-open degrades my MP100 lower than kitlens level. At f/5.6 (lens aperture, actually f/8) the level of detail is certainly decent. Metering seems to be off with the TC on the Zeiss.

In the weekend I will be in Austria and I will probably have some time to do some more tests.

Thanks very much for this. It certainly seems to give good detail once stopped down a bit, and the metering is not a problem as that can be taken care of. Degradation wide open seems more to the edges - the centre seemed much better which I guess is unsurprising.

If, while you are in Austria, you had a chance to take a distant landscape at a mid range aperture with adjusted metering, I'd be really interested to see that - but I appreciate you may well have better things to do with your time! ;-)

Thanks again, Lizzie

I certainly will take some pictures with my both Zeisses (21 and 100), so putting the Kenko on it, won't be a problem.

2 weeks later....

I did a simple large distance middle aperture test. Apertures used are: f/4, f/5.6 and f/8. Focus is at the brown brick house in the lower centre.
The first 3 are with the TC, last 3 are without TC: http://www.flickr.com/photos/universal_creations/8144543097/in/set-72157631792125944/
ps. no lenscorrection or any postprocessing is used

Edit: I uploaded an extra one with a bit postprocessing

Thanks very much for this - the one at 5.6 seems to have come up pretty well, given they are not matched lenses as such. Gives me a good idea anyway! Now I just need to find a good price on a 2nd hand lens! ;-)
