p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · best cheap zoom for crop sensor Canon bodies...

I just purchased a Canon 30D body off a FM member to use as a photobooth camera.... now I need a lens for it. Can anyone recommend a cheap but sharp lens for the crop senor cameras?

I would think the standard 18 - 55, but if there are any cheap but great zooms, I'd love to hear about them.

Thanks for any opinions / help,

James.

Without knowing this, I'll still throw out the Canon 55-250. It's cheap and has very decent image quality.

Really cheap (but not brilliant): 18-55IS (not the non-IS)

Really good and really good value: Tamron 17-50 non-OS

+1

Very decent IQ indeed, fantastic for the money. The bokeh can be a little nervous but I use my 55-250 for lightweight travel all the time.

55-250 without a doubt. I have owned that and the much more expensive 70-300 is and sold the 70-300. Gear snobs will talk down about build quality etc but it is wonderful for the money

Both the 18-55IS and the 55-250IS are awesome little lenses, and for the used prices they can be purchased for they are practically disposable. To me, it's either these or the more expensive top tier lenses, nothing in between is worth it.

Agreed with the exception of certain awesome lenses like the Tamron 17-50 VC (and Non-VC), the Tokina 11-16 2.8, the Sigma 30 1.4 and the Rokinon 8mm fisheye

Yes, those are all great values too and would be considered top tier IQ in my book. It's just the mid tier canon lenses like the 28-135, 70-300, etc that I consider garbage.

jolson72 -- I don't think you can do better for the price than the kit lens 18-55 IS that comes with the new cameras. You can find it for around $100 used in near-new condition.

The 55-250 IS is nice, but extreme telephoto, and runs around $200, not wide angle to mild telephoto of the 18-55.

cheap and decent wide/standard zoom would probably be the sigma 17-70/2.8-4 OS HSM . not as cheap as the kit lens but also not a bad price either. its a very good len

next up if your looking for a tele zoom then the 50-250 IS is a great lens for the money. but also the 70-300 IS is very good also. and then there is the Tamron 70-300 VC is also very good and excellent value

Haven't seen your price bracket, but I've been using a 30D with a Canon 17-40L... I put a
430 EX II on top...(I've also got an off body cable to hand hold the flash).

Great package for general walk around...If you get a full frame, say a 5Dc...you have a wide angle...

I got the EW-83J hood for when it's on the 30D, (doesn't look so strange)...Got to use the one that came with it when on full frame...

As said 18-55IS and 55-250IS make a superb package.

I wouldnt put a 17-40l on a crop when you can get a 17-55f2.8IS, but then neither are cheap...

I was thing versatility…you can use the 17-40 on a full frame…like the affordable 5Dc…later...

Agreeing with others above. On a tight budget, I would add lenses in the following order:
EFS 18-55 IS $100 or so
EFS 55-250 IS $200 or less
EF 50 1.8 $100 or less (for low light occasions)

I keep the 1st 2 lenses with an XT body for my 9 year old grandson to use when we go out to nature areas and it's not unusual for him to get the best photo of the day.

I bought a used Canon 18 - 135 IS this summer for general knock-around shooting with my 7D for $200 and have been very happy with it! I was very pleased with my family vacation photos with it.

I loved the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 on a crop...... They don't hold their value, so 2nd hand are great value.... assuming you can deal with 28 on wide and 75 on long side :-)
