p.1 #1 · [Warning - Toddler] Loving the 40mm pancake on the 5D II

I got my 5D II a couple of days ago and have been enjoying it tremendously, but the 40mm f2.8 is quickly becoming my favorite lens. It was inexpensive, is light weight, and has amazing image quality.

I was expecting the toddler to destroy a pancake lens.

Very nice. I like the angel/demon theme, sans apocalypse.

yes, 40mm F2.8 image quality is very good.
It has become my go to standard lens unless I need faster than F2.8.

the Canon lens hood does work well for me. The design seems to work well to prevent flare and protect the glass. I also tried a screw on 58mm metal lens hood. I prefer the Canon hood as it keeps the package small.

I know some people get tired of seeing kid pics. It's the result of an overly proud father.

I'll get out and shoot more starting in January when I'll be done with school! I picked up a Canon 50 1.4 today for low light situations but the 40 will pull most of the weight.

Yeah, I did notice fare on my sons forehead in one of the photos. I'll have to clean that up. Canon hit a home run with this lens.

Nice series.

It seems that people who own 35L, 50L or the like wonder why they need this 40mm. And it turns out that many can find a reason to own it...it's so small, it's so lightweight, and it's so cheap.

Agreed.

I own the 35L and the Sigmalux - and I find myself bringing this lens instead.

Why? -

1. Its sharp, even wide open.

2. Its tiny and super light.

3. It focuses accurately and quickly.

4. Has a nice MFD.

5. Most of the time f/2.8 is fast enough for outdoor work and provides decent subject isolation when needed.

6. I find 40mm to be a fantastic FL on FF....(often 50mm is too long and 35mm is too wide, 40mm is just right. )....

Samples on a 5d2....

Wide open.....

I suspect because board members have been known to make light of test images of dogs, cats and babies...[& ducks sometimes]. However these are normally snapshots taken with ultra pricy optics like the 200 1.8L or 85 1.2L so the humor is a result of the incongruous combo of snapshot, fat cat on couch and megabuck optic. I think the 40 2.8 is a worthy house cat, dog and baby lens...

Nice set there too, Michael.

I notice someone posted a WTB thread for this lens this afternoon. I suspect this thread was the cause.

Michael. those are way too nice for a $200 lens.. it must be you who gave it that looks.
btw: is the vignette was added in the post-process?
