The really bad guys were put here.
Even during recent times, just walking through the place was a bit terrifying.

I've always wanted to go to Alcatraz. Your photo's, especially #1, are pushing me to go soon.

Thanks Morris and Patrick.
I agree with your feelings about freedom, Morris. And it breaks my heart when I see and learn about all the citizens of the US who abuse the rights and freedoms of others. Freedom isn't free- but it's certainly worth great efforts to keep it.
Alcatraz is in a state of arrested decay , so it will probably be there when you decide to go, Patrick. You get there by boat, so it's a great harbor sightseeing excursion as well.

It's a great place to visit and it doesn't look that bad in real life.

Scary and/or depressing are mainly in the mind of the viewer.
Your shot, Jon, apparently reflects your views of the place.
My interior images reflect the strong and very depressing thoughts I had at the time. This was a place where murderers and other violent criminals spent years or lifetimes- incarcerated within the dimly-lit confines of close spaces.
To me, that's real bad.

It is a great place to visit and one of my favorite places I have seen while traveling. I saw it as a 15 year old in the mid-70s.

But, I share the opinion that it is a dark and foreboding place with a history of bad. Charlie's first photo shows it exactly how I remember the place.

Thanks Red.
There weren't a whole lot of people visiting either of the days I was there, and I was alone- so no chit-chat. I was able to concentrate on the experience- and it was basically depressing.

p.1 #9 · Alcatraz- no place to call home

one of the places I like to visit when we are in San Francisco. After we went one time, we headed over to Fog City diner and the place was packed so we ended up eating at the bar. Guy sitting next to me saw my camera gear and asked what it was for. Told him we were at Alcatraz in the afternoon. That led the little guy on my shoulder to continue the story about how my grandfather was incarcerated there and was interesting to see where he had lived for a number of years.

I know I am bad, but I knew he wanted to believe.....he could tell his friends about the guy that was there to see where grandpa lived.....lol
