p.1 #1 · Leica R 19/2.8 VS Zeiss 21/2.8

Has anyone used both lenses?
I'd like to get some input on the pros and cons in comparing the two lens.
I have used Zeiss 21 briefly, but have no experience with the leica 19mm lens.

How is the distortion on Leica 19mm?

I'm looking for an ideal lens for a landscape.

Thank you in advance for kind inputs.

his results mirror my findings.

the ZE 21, is better than the C/Y 21 as well.

I also found this article:

Does the last statement also mirror your findings?

Wow not much between the Olympus F2 and F3.5. Considering how much smaller and less than half the price it is, I'm surprised it's so close.

In what way do you find it better?

Native mounts, auto-aperture, new coatings.

A new production unit is likely to be closer to factory calibration than an older used one.

OTOH, a well-used sample may have been used for good reason:

I don't think a sample comparison of 2 copies is really that valid.

If anything, Lens Rental Blog showed how much variance there is!

My next big step in photography I think will be to learn how to effectively use test charts and compare the numbers against other findings.

what do you look for in a "landscape lens"?

judging by this sample image library:
http://forum.xitek.com/thread-619411-1-1-1.html
compared to a z21/2.8 z*, the leica 19/2.8v2 has 'leica colours', and softer everywhere but the centre. distortion seems well controlled though.

fyi here's another comparison test, but i didn't find it all that informative: http://www.16-9.net/lens_tests/canon1635ii_a/c1635ii_a2.html

Very well, but none of these qualities is related to the three performance measures on that 16-9.net page.

That article was written before Zeiss released the new 21. So, I elaborated. The newer 21 is better.

I can't believe the f/2 scored that well. I liked the lens, but it was not something I'd put up as wide-angle perfection.

If you're shooting it on a Canon, Paul, that's the best choice anyway. The 19 vII fouls Canon FF mirrors without something getting shaved. And the first version, which doesn't foul the mirror, is good, but introduces distortion issues (like the gull-wing distortion) not evident in the second version.

'Native mounts, auto-aperture, new coatings.'
'The newer 21 is better.'

Unfortunately - since few have the chance or the inclination to buy the Contax version - no.

The glass selection is doubtless very different:

"Lens cross-section of the Distagon 2.8/21 for the Contax SLR, a relatively complex lens with 15 elements in 13 groups. However, it had no aspherical surfaces. Its performance, particularly the perfect correction of lateral chromatic aberration, was achieved solely by the combination of very special (and expensive) high-index glass types with glass types displaying extremely high anomalous partial dispersion."

You can view the astounding MTF chart on page 6 of this document:

http://blogs.zeiss.com/photo/en/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/en_CLB41_Nasse_LensNames_Distagon.pdf

There are very good reasons why the market retains such incredible value in the Contax version.

that doesn't sound like it has anything to do with photography.

The ZE 21 weighs 720g (Hard to find info as every spec sheet only gives the ZF.2 weight which is less)
The C/Y 21 is 550g + adapter. Over 100g difference.

I remember people being worried about the performance of the new 21mm Distagon before it was released. Even though Zeiss have changed the glass it seems to have no negative impact. The MTF shows improvement with the new design.
