I am left with only one camera, D4. I never went on a trip with one camera. So what would be a good "back up" for my D4. I am looking at D800e, that I wanted to go with my old D3, but it wasn't there for me when I needed it, that was why D4. Now i am thinking about D800e again and at it D3x. compared with D800e, what would the D3x with average mileage be worth? both are FX and should at about same FPS. IQ, well two generations separate the two cameras.
I see that people still are trying to get $3000+++ for D3x, is there any rational for this?
If you do a quick search on the forum, the general opinion is that unless you need the battery life and body style, the D800e is a no-brainer replacement of the D3x, since the D3x is still about 600-1000 dollars more expensive. I'm stupid though, and I'd probably want the completely pro build of the D3x, but I'd wait for the price to come down more. If I was just looking for a backup body or a lightweight alternative to the D4, the d600 or D800 would be my choice.
Unless the D3x is similar price as D800e, I would get the D800e. Ofcourse if you truly need the more robust build of the D3x, then the price difference might not matter.
D3x, no brainer! Not only it is bigger, heavier, have more expensive batteries, but image quality is also lot worse! Sure you can also miss some features with D3x, but you pay more!
that being said, there were people preferring D2x when D3/D300 was launched,... so.

Now there is pure wisdom for you.
Bob, you don't want the D800E, listen to Miss Kitty, she makes perfect sense here.

How many shots have you done with the D3x ??
The D800 has better iso-performance = sure, but at low iso I think the D3x is still unbeaten, and a very strong camera, as the D4.
Unless it is very important for you to get many pixels.
If you need the build quality,D3X. If you are after image quality, D800E.
I sold my D3X shortly after I got the D800E, the D800E's image quality is better in all aspects.
Build quality is nice, but it rarely shows in the images the camera produces

I'm confused. Are you saying the D3x has better or worse IQ than the D800E? I read this as though you are saying it is much worse.

The D3X is old technology. As a back up camera the one to get is the D600.
I use a D800E but I think the camera is quite finicky and not ideal as a back up. The D600 is
getting some pretty good reviews and it produces excellent images without any fuss or bother.

Are you trolling again? Your post (as usual) makes no sense at all. You say a larger camera with expensive batteries and lower IQ is the better choice? Exactly what do you base this ridiculous opinion on? D3X has poor image quality? What's wrong with you? I'm sure the usual apologists will defend you with the tired old excuses about your poor command of the English language but I don't buy it. I think you post here just to stir the pot.

That is right, Kitty, D3x is more expensive, heavier and bigger therefore it is a better of the two!!! no brainer, ha...
D800 overthe d3x. Shot the d3x for years and it was truly a wonderful camera. With the exception of weight and build the D800 is better. I would consider the d600 as it is smaller incredible IQ and incredible noise control. It would make a perfect backup.
