I have the 2xIII (to go with 400/2.8 vr), but i can't say I am very happy with it. I am wondering if any one has compared it with the 1.7x tc? Any one has both?
I have both TC's and I use the TC 1.7x more often than the 2x III. With the new Nikon 800 you can get AF with f/4 lens and it is my preferable choice when I use my Nikon 600mm and I need longer range. Recently, I have been using the TC 2x III more often with a 70-200mm VR and the results are acceptable since there is always a tradeoff between more range and IQ.
This is a sample of a picture taken with the 600mm and the TC.1.7x (1000 for focal length).
That was whom I was looking for: some one with both tc 1.7x and 2xIII.
Now you know both, I have now tc 2xIII, should I get the 1.7x? would it give me better IQ? The reach trade-of isn't much.
the tc iii are twitchy, somea rea great some are lousy. Buy it new only or return . the refurbs are poor.
the tc 17 athe the2.0 iii are very equal when both are good. the half stop is nicer
I think I will give it a real try. In the last few months with the lens 400/2.8 VR, I have been shooting mostly at 400mm or 560mm (+1.4x), hardly any need for +2x. Now that I will be shooting more birds, I will give this setup---400 + 2x=800mm/5.6--- a real try. I will shot at f6 or 7.

Here's a 100% crop w/ 300 f2.8 VR and the TC-17E II
Close in the 2.0 are pretty good but the 1.7 is better....and the 1.4 is better still. There's no free lunch re: FL
I have the 400/2.8 and all 3 current TCs, I find the gain in IQ between the 2.0 and 1.7 is not a significant as the difference between the 1.4 and the 1.7. When I first got the 2.0 I thought that I would be getting rid of the 1.7 because the difference in IQ was that small, but I kept it and am glad now that I did. Now I use it mostly to refine composition when I am shooting motorsports and not so much for birding, where it seems I am always looking for more reach or more stealth to get closer.

I shoot with a 400vr and the 3 tc's. My copy is extremely sharp with all 3 tc's and I will not hesitate to shoot any of the 3 tc's wide open. My least used is the 1.7 as I prefer the 2xtc to the 1.7.
I do fine tune my tc's with each body and lens combo.
I actually went down from the 600vr to the 400vr because of the flexibility the 3 tcs offer.

Interesting decision making process. Almost like mine. I used to shoot 500/4. I sold it thinking I would not buy another long lens. Well, I found out very quickly that I couldn 't do without. I first thought of getting another 500/4, but I wanted to have more reach. 600/4 came to mind. I could shoot at 600 or 840mm/5.6. At that time the 400/2.8 vr came in the competition. I ended up picking the lastest one. I could shoot at 400 at f 2.8 that what I do often. f2.8 is not possible with 600mm. I can shoot at 560mm/4 with same IQ of 500/4 and close to 600/4. With tc-2xIII I shoot at 800/5.6, practically same as 840mm/5.6. So far i am very happy wiht my decision specially after the last safari in Africa, where I shot mostly with D4+560/4.
I just ordered the tc-1.7x hoping at 680mm/5 I would get better IQ than with 2x When I really do not have to have max. reach.
