Any suggestions on what it should be renamed to? Is it a case of LR still being able to locate it with new naming or that by renaming it will force the creation of a new prefs file while leaving the old one intact in case of issues?

I renamed mine to <filename>.OLD. LR created a new one with the original name. That should be all you need to do.
I've put off upgrading to LR4. Still using 3.5 because 1)I have it 2) It works) 3) I'm experienced using it 4)I've got a 2009 1.3ghz core2duo with 4GB of RAM. LR3.5 is slow enough.
Planning on a new computer this month and I have a digital workflow workshop I have to teach in November. Can't really put off upgrading any longer.
I wish Adobe would just come out and say they have issues with the preference file.
Either a corrupted file during install or issues with machines with previously installed version of LR.

Not a big deal to replace the shortcut to lightroom with a shortcut to a batch file that deletes the preferences file and THEN launches lightroom.
anybody experience slowness related to the size of the window on the screen?
on my 27" imac it's slower to show adjustments if I maximize the window compared to if I make it half the size of the screen or something. is there a way to address this?
anyone here on mountain lion? I couldnt follow the address above because you can no longer go to the library folder under user...it just isnt there. How do i find the preference now?
I did this but it seems to have reverted back a few months and doesn't have lot of my new work from my catalogs in there. It is fast and I renamed the file but how to I get everything else I've been working on?
