Hi all. Just had the following email. Can't make my mind up about this one. Will probably let it lie, but would be interested to hear some views. On the one hand I think, good of him to get in touch, on the other I think, while I have no problem with other people shooting the day (it happens at every wedding) I don't particularly like it when another pro wants to 'deliver a set', possibly ahead of me.

Hi Tony
My name is xxx, I am Leon's best man. Im just dropping you a note to let you that I will be taking a few shots myself. I am a photography lecturer and want to give them my twist on the day. As i am obviously involved in the ceremony etc it will really only be the reception that Il be shooting, I will use a very simple and small camera, no flash and I will do my best to not step on your toes.
Just letting you know out of profesional courtesy.

If anything, I'd mention the email to the bride and reaffirm that your only concern is their happiness. Stepping on some UB's toes sometimes can't be avoided.

Why would anyone care about his "twist on the day" ? Does he thing he's that important ? And what's a "photography lecturer" ? Is that like a teacher or professor who lectures on photography ?

I was talking with a catering manager last week and she was asking me what I thought of the joker running around with a camera with a big thing on his flash (fong). I hadn't even noticed the guy before she said something. I don't understand why photographers tend to care so much. As long as they're not being total d-bags, and usually they aren't, what is the difference to you? They hired you, not uncle Bob. You already won.

It looks good to me. At least he asked.
In the last week's wedding, a guy sneaked to the bride's room when she was getting ready with bridesmaids. He was shooting with Canon 5D Mark II and 24-70 lens. Obviously the bride knew him so that I did not bother, as long as he was not causing any delay.

Largely agree with the sentiment here, but I'll be honest, it does gall me a bit. I think it's because of the time a few years back when a guest shot images at the ceremony and then turned up to the evening reception with a burned disk of his images.
It'll be fine, and you're all right, but I find the need of photographers to shoot 'off the job' at weddings far from classy.
