p.1 #1 · Album design

Hi all,

I am trying to come up with new ideas to design albums, my favorite style and the one I am trying to sell is
the story telling one just images in white backgrounds just like the picture below but without the green area,
well to give a little touch to the album I have done a design based on a client album but adding that green area, the cover will be in green plain material matching the color with the names and date engraved.
Not all the spreads will go in B&W though I am quite tempted !!!

C&C very welcome.

Thanks
Jaime

Are you asking whether or not to add the green background layer? I don't think it adds anything in this case. It sounds like the impulse is to implement new ideas but it doesn't seem that there is anything wrong with the old ideas from a client-value perspective even if you may be tired of the old ideas. In this case I don't see a purpose or benefit to the color layer, and it potentially takes emphasis away from the photos which seems counterintuitive to the point of the album.

meh. I tend to agree with TRR. Not sure it adds anything to the album. I also tend to think that the more complicated or and coordinated you make an album the quicker it's style will date itself. Personally i'd stick with classic elements that will look good forever.

Thanks for the answers,

I am not so sure it doesnt add anything to the album if I match the covers in color with the layer, on the other hand I am not talking about an extreme design where the decoravite elements really distract the viewer from the images. I know the best way to really concentrate on the photos is a white background with no frames or any other ornament.

I am not tired of the white background style It is just trying to find something different and not too complicated I think there are more styles to create an album than the purest of the purest one without taking much attention from the photos.

Just my opinion.

I agree with your thoughts. I think there is this idea that simple is best so that means stripping away everything except the images.

If that idea of simplicity is all there is to design then i can give you all the design skills you need within a few minutes so don't waste three years of your life going to school.

Though it often seems it is those who have studied design who build websites so basic that a kid could have interpreted simple to mean the same thing.

I don't mind this. Perhaps something to balance it on the other side or elsewhere but i cannot visualize exactly what.

Thanks for the answer Marcus,

Well the idea of the album is not only the green layer itself but the possible benefit from matching the flat color of the covers with it.

I think I see what you're trying to do. I don't think it's something I would do throughout the entire album. Maybe do it to the very first and very last spreads to complement the cover.
