I have used it on film. I also have Elmarit-R 28mm v.2, Zuiko 28mm 3.5, Yashica ML 28mm 2.8 and Hexanon 28mm 3.5. I sold the Zeiss, because I liked the images it produced not any more than those made with the Zuiko, Yashica or Hexanon. The Elmarit-R is tops, but may also get sold, for the same reason. The other lenses come really close for a fraction of the price. But again, I have only used these lenses on film.

It's one of my favorite lenses - and I have a few. In addition to central sharpness and rendition as already mentioned, I really like the handling: focus throw is longish, size is ideal (for SLR), DOF scales are perfect. I often focus by scale only.

Didn't 16-9's 28mm hall of fame list Zuiko 28/2 as winner?

I too really like my C/Y 28/2.8, but I'd love to know how the "Hollywood" F2 version compares with it and with the Elmarit?

Don't know about the Elmarit V2, but I had both the little Distagon and the Hollywood at different times and from a rendering point of view I liked the Hollywood better - at least my copy was sharper across the frame and had more natural colour to my eye. Of course, not having both side by side makes it a difficult task, esp. if you take into account that I had them on different cameras as well. Only problem with the Hollywood is that it is bigger and heavyer than its little brother.

Unfortunately the Hollywood doesn't clear the mirror on the 5D series (some lucky 5D owners excepted perhaps -- 1Ds series should work though).

I have no idea, but I use the Zuiko 28/2 far more often than the the other 28's I have.

A friend of mine is planning to do a trip around the world and decided to take my old nex-3 and leave his 5DII *24-70L with me for the time.
I have a pretty complete Nex-setup so i will use the 5dII mainly for situations when i want a fast AF camera with external flash, but i would like to see how it performs with a Zeiss lens for my usual landscape pictures.
I think i would like to try c/y 28/2.8, the question is whether it will hit the mirror on the 5dII, this site says it might.
Which adapter would you recommend?
Are there different Versions?

thanks for your input!

Best "adapter" is probably Leitax, unless you want to use it on film FF (but then, there are EOS FF film cams too).

Otherwise I think Fotodiox are decent..

Problem with almost every adapter is, that theres always someone who has good experience with one, and someone who has bad. Leitax is exception I think, but its not adapter..

+ 1 to everything Mescalamba said.

P.S. the Fotodiox Pro adapters are "the good ones".

I don't have Hollywood version, but have a CY 2.8 28 with Leitax conversion. Great thing about this lens is it is small, but not the strongest performer if you nit pick. Rendering is zeiss ( however, it seems slightly more bluish compare to Z series ). Somehow, I prefer to use this lens more for closer range than infinity or landscape.

Some random from the past

Phillip, basic split is the MMx vs the AEx versions. I have only MM versions (of any CY including the 28/2.8) and no one hits the mirror. In the same site you point to there's a discussion on adapter thickness, the thinner the better sort of. Both cameras and lenses (+ adapters) vary so there never seem to be a single culprit unfortunately.

Two problems can arise, one is mirror hit (never had that), the 2nd is do you really achieve infinity stopping down? I've had a increasingly nagging feeling that some of my lenses may not. Checking LV wideopen all do achieve infinity. But on some lenses stopped down I am not really 100% sure.

There are various ways to fix that - if a problem is found. The 28 is as I understand highly praised for landscaping, something I do not do too much of myself. So it's going to be very interesting to see what you do if you take the step.

I have the AE version which hit the mirror of my 5DMkII from about 2m.
According to this thread the lens can easily be modified to avoid mirror collisions, but it seems to me that it is only the MM version that can be modified this way.

Distagon 28/2.8 C/Y is much sharper in corners than my Yashica 28/2.8 ML,sharper with much less CA compared to my Zuiko 28/3.5 and crisper than my Canon L 17-40/4 set at 28mm.
Maybe I'm lucky but I never experienced any mirror hitting with 3 copies of 5Dc in the past and 3 copies of 5D2 with my one AE and two MM 28/2.8 Distagons.

I like this lens for it's excellent overall IQ,versatility, built quality ans small size.

I think my 5DMkII has less clearance than the average.

Wonderful photos from everyone. You do make me want one!
Thanks for the input and further comments and samples are welcome.
Has anyone tried it on 5d3? After trying silent shutter mode last weekend at the local photo fair I am definitely hooked.

thanks for all the input!
I have tried to learn how to tell a MM from a AE but failed, because of the possible mirror problems i would like to get the MM version.

The MM versions have the smallest aperture opening in green (f/16, f/22, ...).
