I finally have my lightroom working again! I finally had had enough and took my imac into the Apple store to the genius bar. He ran a bunch of tests and found that all of the hardware was working fine. Then he looked at a few more things. My imac was stuck indexing constantly. He stopped the indexing of the hard drive and then restarted the indexing and now it is working normal again. the indexing might not be your issue but taking it into the Apple store might be something to look into.

After I changed the preference file name, LR 4 was just as fast as LR 3. Thanks to amoline and others for posting up the "fix".
