Jim, that is interesting, I mean the way you describe the AF response as "stepped".......have you ever observed that type of AF response before ?

No. It's hesitant, discontinuous, and doesn't always end at an in-focus position. Sort of like me.

I'd be intrigued to see a comparison of IQ between a 1.4+1Dx versus 7D on an 800 and see which Ives you better bang for your buck.
I'd imagine the 7D would AF better than taped pins on the 1.4 plus 800 combo on a 1Dx but I could be wrong.
Anyone done a comparison of IQ and/or AF?

That bad ? Jim, based on my own sad experience, drinking and shooting does require a very solid tripod support, or a fence, or a wall onto which to lean as well as deposit gears, otherwise, the resulting images are mostly misfocused and wretchedly poor in general.

Yep. Same old story. As my good buddy JW says, "The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get".

This sounds exactly like my 100-400 + 1.4x III with tape on my 5D3. I would describe it as "jerky".
Seems that with tape, the Canon 1.4 doesn't do very well. The question remains, is this down to the optics of the TC and the optics of the particular lens or is the tape interfering with some other signal that is supposed to get through to the camera? Artie says the tape on the 1.4 and the 800L isn't very good, yet the Kenko is "amazing" so if the tape only interferes with reporting then the optics of the TC must be the difference.

Maybe... Maybe not. Apparently, the Mk III has an 'improved CPU' (not that I knew my earlier Extenders had CPU's - at all).
Anyway, I also have a slightly older and yet relatively excellent Kenko Teleplus Pro 300 DG 1.4x TC that I haven't yet tried. ILYK...
P.S. based on optical performance, in my personal experience, the Mk III Extenders are noticeably better at the edges and in the corners than the Mk I, MK II and above-mentioned Kenko. FWIW.

Thanks Joshua,
If you ever have the chance it would be interesting to see if you untape the Kenko and use it with the 800L and the 5D3 if you get the same lockup and aperture set at "00" that others have had happen.
The interesting thing is he is using that same TC, it is reporting the correct way, but the 1DX is still allowing normal AF functions He also tried it on the 1D4 with the 800L and it let him use all the AF points instead of just the centre point. So basically the same sort of functionality.
Geoff,
Sorry for the delayed response but I just removed the tape on the pins of the Kenko and mount my 800mm plus TC on the 5D Mark III. The correct effective aperture, f/8.0 is displayed and the camera won't AF although it doesn't lock up. The electronic connection of his TC must be different than mine. BTW, the AF is still quite smooth and not jumpy or "stepped" or jerky as Jim and you have reported with the 100-400mm plus TC.

I am surprised that to the best of my knowledge nobody has confirmed that finding of A.Morris ? I can not do it because I ain't got the Kenko converter, and I do not need it either, certainly not for the 800L. I suspect a few other 1DX/800L owners are in the same boat as I.
As a side note, I do not understand why is that certain Florida "birders" need to mount a TC permanently on their 800L lenses.
I have just read a post by another Florida birder who says that unless one is on top of a bird, 800L bare just doesn't cut it.

Thanks for the update Joshua. Yours is behaving how one would expect with the extra reporting pins. Not sure why he is getting an error.

Possibly Canon have code that specifically forbid AF @ f/8 in 5D III, whereas 1D X doesn't so it can at least try. Can't see it having anything to do with the 100000pixel colour sensor array on the 1D X, but that could be another reason.
But all EOS cameras have it. It's the 1D X which is different, as if they deleted the code lines which cuts AF above 5.6. But of course they didn't as several posters have demonstrated using a Canon TC.
Would anyone with 1D X please buy this TC and tell us about it?

Well I have a Kenko Pro 300, so if someone wants to send me a 1D X and 800L for scientific testing, call me. Testing should only take about 2-3 years to complete, but will come with a snazzy powerpoint presentation with lot's of graphs.

Most 1DX + 800L shooters do not own or care for the Kenko TC... At this rate, Peter is our only hope!

The Kenko Pro is actually a good TC. It was as good in the centre as the 1.4 Tc II and only a bit worse in the corners. also you can use it only just about any lens that won't support a Canon TC.

I'm sure the Kenko TC is great. My point is that the 1DX does not support AF at f/8 and tricking it to make it work would defeat the investment of upgrading to the best Canon AF system in the market.

But I don't think anyone would be using it for action work, only static subjects or slow moving critters. Even on 1 D IV that would be the case, although AF is far more usable @ f/8 of course.
