I only buy equipment that I can hand-carry onto "Concorde".
Since both the R system and that SST are now-retired 1960s-era technology, and the lens is to big to carry on, I stand on my principles and flatly refuse to buy this lens.

But when it comes to price, the Leica APO-Telyt-R 1:5.6/1600mm truly goes above and beyond. This one-off extreme telephoto was created for Sheikh Saud Bin Mohammed Al-Thani of Qatar for 16 million Hong Kong dollars, just over $2 million in the US.
That lens is a one off, but the photo above is from the prototype that's in the Leica factory showroom. Since this lens isn't exactly being sent out for review, we don't know an awful lot about it. It fits the Leica R-mount, is 1.2 meters long (1.55 with a lens hood), has a maximum diameter of 42cm, and weighs 60kg. The kicker? Sheikh Al-Thani had a Mercedes four-wheel drive commissioned specially to drive the lens around, and act as a support." https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/ufiles/16/703216.jpg

When your a Sheik who cares if your an actual photographer.
When you have more money than several (if not most) nations, you can buy pretty much anything just for the heck of it!
If I have that much money I would probably just have somewhere a fully furnished and self sufficient Island with naked women between the ages of 18-25 running around!

Without any camera to take pictures of them? Nahhh.......
OK, I figured it out.
The guy had to have them both in order to test them. The famous brick wall test.
I mean, how can you be sure that something is good? It has to compete against something else .
Anyone spotted lately a brick wall in Qatar while using google earth?
Yeah, there is the notched sight, but it's not as accurate or easy to use as a set of cross-hairs. And there's this rectangular hole in the top of the handle that looks like it was made for some reason like an attachment. You had me all excited there, Carsten.
