p.1 #1 · So my wife / business partner dropped 3 lenses last shoot...

I've gotta vent a little, because I don't want to say anything hurtful to her.

Last shoot, my wife / business partner dropped our 50mm f/1.4, our 24-70 f/2.8, and our 70-200mm f/2.8 mkI. The 50mm was fine. Not a scratch.

The 24-70 appears to be fine, though it had an ND filter on it which is bent, so we'll have to take it in to get it removed.

The 70-200mm, however, is in really bad shape. The second element from the front has a half-moon shaped series of cracks in it (though you can't see it in photos!), but the AF and MF doesn't work above 135mm. Turning the MF ring does nothing at 135-200mm.

*sigh*

I've told her for years to be more careful with gear because she's accident prone plus she tends to leave gear in precarious positions. (The 70-200 broke because it she left it on a tripod that wasn't setup / balanced properly, so it fell over.)

I think now she's learning the hard way, but I'm pretty frustrated. If the 24-70 proves to be damaged after we get the ND filter off, I'll have to bite my tongue even harder. (She knows I'm upset. Nothing needs to be said.)

Vent over. Thanks gang.

Ask her to do the paperwork for CPS. When she's sees the bill, she'll get the hint

tough situation for sure. Might need to take a 1000' step back and realize the value she has provided both in companionship and overall savings vs hiring another shooter. No matter her faults, she is your partner. I would casually bring it up with her to be more careful, let her know the overall value of the equipment and leave it at that - but don't forget her value to you outside of the business.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for the health of your 24-70.

Let her handle the repair process + talk about getting better insurance for your gear?

I agree, let her handle the repair process, she will be much more careful in the future.

My wife dropped our 70-200 as well, not a big damage, 80 euros to repair it,
but she was so sorry that I had to console her. Her work for me worth much more than that.

Honestly, if you're in business than you should have CPS/ be properly insured... accidents happen, so get over it. I feel like this is mush more of a "I told you so, because you're my wife," situation than it is a "my business partner has accidents," situation. Get the gear fixed, get over it, and keep shooting.

She is probably pretty upset herself. Take her out on a date and tell her how much you love her and get a proper insurance. Now you also have an excuse to get the much better 70-200 mk II :-)

+1. She'll already remember how she felt when she broke the lenses. Score some mega points now by giving her new memories of how forgiving you were after the fact.

Venting elsewhere = good.

Here's hoping it is just one and not two, and good luck!

As others have mentioned, you should have business insurance that covers accidents like this so it should just take your deductable to replace or repair the items. I've broken a few items accidently and also my assistants have. It's rare, but accidents happen. I do realize the need to vent, but hopefuly you both can learn from this so it happens less often. It took me a long time to trust my wife after she dropped one of my cameras, but it happens to everyone no matter how careful they are.

I agree with this. I also don't think "venting" in public about your wife is cool. Call her a business partner to make it business related all you want but she's your wife first.

Yeah insurance should cover it, worst case scenario... I feel your pain, man... Tough situation, because it's not like you can make her pay for it or anything, since you share income lol. Poop happens.

Call me crazy, but after the second drop of the day, I would have said something to the tune of "Honey, I love you, but how bout you don't change lenses the rest of today. You seem to be having an off day."

And yea, if Brie found out I was posting on here about her, she'd be breaking a fourth lens, and I'd be picking splinters of Nikon G-glass out of my ass for months.
