Yes you are saving that much.

yes, I understand that but if you look more closely, you save a few lbs on the head but gain a few lbs with the battery so are you saving all that much?
Don't get me wrong, I am looking into that system. Just don't know if its size/weight savings enough for me to jump in with both feet.
Again.... jzucker wrote:
something in between in between that is a bit easier to lug around that gets equivalent results
Though I understand you are looking for perfection, this system is indeed "in between", "a bit easier", with "equivalent results" as you requested.
See this too So now the head(s) AND the battery are light.
I don't use it because I'm cool with what I do have, but based on your description the Quadra answers.

i dunno...From what I read, the battery life is not very good. I'd have to lug a 2nd battery with me. I guess I'm going to stick with the monolights. Today I swapped out my backup (d-lite 2) and my # 1 light (bxri 500) and used the d-lite 2 for all my shots. I really loved it. Much lighter and easier to carry plus it goes down to 12ws and I was able to shoot at F4 which I could never do with the BXRI 500. The only disadvantage is that I can't remotely set the power but I really like the dlite2.

Location photography has always been a love of mine. From the 1970's to today, location lighting has come a long way. You can't name many setups that I haven't tried. Metz, Quantum, Lumedyne, Sunpak, Dynalite, Profoto w/Dynalite inverter, Nikon CLS, Elinchrom w/Dynalite Inverter, Rangers and finally the Quadra have all been part of my kit at one time or another. The ultimate location kit, hands down, is the Quadra. With the Skyports, you can control your lighting from the camera or from your subject. I've always been a one man crew, and the portability of the Quadra is a real blessing. It can be used with all the great Elinchrom modifiers, from the Octa to a shoot thru umbrella.

Thumphrey, Do the quadras, at 400 ws have enough light for you? Do you find the want for the 1000ws of a ranger vs the quadras? I currently have the Ranger speed pack but thinking about the lighter quadras and wondering if 400ws is enough. Thanks!

looks like you can get F16(ish) with a standard refelector at 2m but you'd lose at least a stop of light with something like the 39" deep octa so I don't think you could overpower sunlight.

I am handicapped and shoot alone. Best thing I did was get a nice avenger A420 wheeled stand. Unless I am shooting on the beach, I can easily roll my stand with 37" octa or BD with Einstein/VML. The stands is made for studio but so far has worked quite well outdoors. Even if I have an assistant, I use them for something else not holding that painter's pole (that is how I started). No problems even using 5' octa with that stand.
Someone on one of the forums modified a regular stand to take those nice penumatic wheels. And that setup had vagabond II as weight. They sell it for $400 a pop. I asked couple of times about plans etc but didn't get the response. The person is Mike something and he shoots seniors etc. and also offers classes. You can dig up the video on youtube and make one yourself if handy.
