If it does come with an improved version of the D7000 AF, I will be very curious to see how it compares to the D800's af at middle and far distances. Lots of testing has show the D800's af can't hit a distant AF point reliably with Nikons fast primes and deliver repeatable results, it's likely only apparent because of the very high resolution. Diglloyd has done extensive testing on it. We shall see. Exciting.
I just ordered pizza... 30 minutes or its free. Way faster than waiting for the D600. I am just kidding of course! Yes, I am mocking the rumors and people waiting to find out if this thing is for real. YOLO
Give me the D300s with 24mp and the iso range of the D700 and I'll truly be in heaven and won't have to change my 17-55. But since there isn't even a rumor about the D400 it's a long way off.
Personally, I would LOVE the D600 as rumored, which is basically a FX D7000. It's a bit ironic as I made the jump from a D7000 to a D3s, but the thing I missed the most was the small size. Bonus points would be if it works with the MB-D11 (less likely) and the EN-EL15 (most likely).
I was waiting for a D300 replacement, but am beginning to wonder if I really will ever buy a larger body like that again. I've been using a D5100 all summer and really like its compactness. Maybe I should just buy a D3200. I just don't see any real advantage to something like a D600, especially if near $2,000. In addition to a D5100, I've been using a Leica IIIc a lot. I really like it!

Heh, what's not to like. I got to play with one of those for a couple years. Spoils you silly.

The rumors are that it will get pretty much the same AF system as the D7K, which is no slouch.
I read in another thread here that the D7K isn't as happy with TC's and especially Superzooms as a D300s, but that is a (relatively) small group of folks. Having seen plenty of work from Trenchmonkey with his D7K's, including lots of BIF and rodeo work, I don't think you can call the AF "handicapped" (though a good operator doesn't hurt, either )
I think the bigger gap is for those of us looking for a D300s replacement. But honestly, I just got a D300s to replace my D90, and I couldn't be happier. Yeah, I'd like ISO 100 and some additional ISO/DR, but the D600 has kind of freed me from wondering about my next camera for a while. I chose the D300s over a D7000 for handling and over a D400 because it might never exist. The D600 just isn't interesting to me unless it is crazy cheap (think $1499 or less). Even then, I'm so happy with the handling of the D300s that I'd probably just buy a D700 over a D600. Knowing it is coming and not a D400 (at least any time soon) gave me the incentive to snap up a really sweet camera, and I'm enjoying the heck out of it!
My guess is the D600 will come in at $1899 or $1999 and do very well for a whole lot of people, but I won't buy one....Show more →
The D7000's AF is a JOKE compared to the D700. I missed too many shots using that camera, if a D600 use the same AF and Nikon didn't improved it before, it will flop.
while there is an obvious difference between the D4 & D7000 I love how the D4 gets it right all the time. Even quick snap shots of my little one are getting nailed at 1.8 & 2.2.
When I grab the D7000 it is hit & miss.
The D600 might share the same specs with the AF system, but it would be the newer expeed 3 etc which hopefully should make it less of a slouch.
If the D800 file sizes at 36mpx are ridiculously large, how big would the file sizes be at 24mpx? I definitely do not need files that large, because I never print anything overly large to begin with. Since owning my D90 I've printed two canvases at 24x36. Two in 4 years.
If the 24mpx files are even remotely close to the size of the 36mpx files, I dont think I want it. Thats a lot of cards and a lot of hard drive space to keep up with.
D3x 24.5 MP 14 bitt files are around 28.3 MB and when converted to 16 bitt Tiffs come in around 6048 x 4032 Pixels, for print size of 20.16" X 13.44" @ 300 dpi.....139.5 MB files.
This camera has helped slow down my decision making process in moving to a full frame. May go for the d600 if it has good low light ability (high isos) and good dynamic range. (although I suppose its foolish to expect d800 performance in a scaled down package)

how many of you believe D700 has become obsolete?
I don't think you'll find many takers on that one but I will say that I'm holding out for the D600 over the d700 simply because of video capabilities. Otherwise I would have probably purchased a D700 by now.

A lot of folks have said that about the D7K, but it seems many attribute it to how demanding it is for good technique.
The D7000's AF is a JOKE compared to the D700. Well, then you NEVER took the time to learn it. I'm over 98% in focus shots
shooting well into D3/D700 territory as far as light/action goes. Don't blame the gear
for your shortcomings...it's hardly a joke (unlike your comment) Noobs!!

Every time someone says something negative about Nikon, trenchmonkey is here to tell us how great it is.

Don't say THAT I just bought a Refurb with 57 clicks and it thinks it's brand new
and still a great D3 back-up. ....feelings
I think that the higher the pixel density in any camera, the more critical focus accuracy becomes. Whether it is operator error, set up error, lens error, backfocus error or all of the above. All things being equal, a 12mp DX camera will generally be more forgiving than a 16mp DX camera. Just like a 6mp DX camera is a lot more forgiving than a 12mp DX camera. I think it is interesting that my lowly D70 is still awesome for focus accuracy, even though it's focus system is somewhat primitive compared to what we have in newer models. The rumor is that the D600 with have the D7000 39 point autofocus system. Do you think that it is possible that it will deliver better results in the D600 body since it will have a lower pixel density than the D7K?
