Peter, what lenses are you using when you notice this?

I also set my cameras to a longer delay before going to sleep.

Regarding your second point: I just did a basic AF comparison at home between the X, IV and III. Obviously this is different than BIF, but might be informative. Using the center point, with a lens like the 70-200 f/4L IS, at 200mm, focusing on very dark folded textiles where there are some areas with contrast and other areas with no contrast, all of the cameras have trouble finding focus in AI Servo, but when there is sufficient contrast,

Thanx Ron, the "wake up" AF delay happens with a variety of telephoto lenses used, no exception.

Now, the delay to start Servo tracking happened only with the 300 f/2.8 IS MkI, because that was the only time I did low light tracking......and that sort of shooting I do only with f/2.8 and faster lenses. Again, it's not that the camera tried and couldn't lock focus.....there was no lens AF movement whatsoever during the delay period.

Blind? Hummingbirds? What for? One day I was standing next to my hummingbird feeder, in plain sight. I was taking a picture of a hummer sitting on a branch about 6' away. I was moderately still, not perfectly still. My right elbow was 1/2" from the feeder. At that moment, another hummer flew to the other side of the feeder, and plopped down the ring perch. This bird was 6" from my elbow. I looked down at him from 18" away. He looked back up at me as if to say "so what, this is MY feeder".

Hi Don,

Hummers here in SoCal seem fearless at times. Last summer, hose no camera in hand I was casually watering our poolside container garden, had the hose pointed up watering/playing like a kid, water arching about two feet in front of me. A fluttering by my ear and then a beautiful blue/green hummer has landed near my hand, about 5 inches from the front of the hose...drinking then bathing He repeated this a few times then flew under the hose for a full on bath...

I was still, in complete wonder, jaw on the deck I'm guessing, truly an amazing few minutes. I kept watering, he came back, swooped under the hose for another wash, finished, paused and seem to look at me then zipped up to the top of a palm tree...as I watched him perch for a brief bit on a dying frown, he turned his head toward me and squeaked and then flew off...talk about feeling fortunate!

re-edit...my mind is going somewhere, need to find it, wrong thread...oops, this is not the summer thread, repeat...I'm running outta chalk! This is a summer photo thread so please do excuse the lack of a digital image, he's my internal image of those precious few hummer bathing moments in prose/poetry...

Little One, Smiling Heart

In the depths of my despair
salvation found
in tiny fluttering wings.
Not even the deafness
of a love starved world
can hold me down.
This gentle hummingbird
drinking from near my hands
has brought me back to life.
A simple gesture
of faith.
Such beauty this world.

To put a context to this poem's tone, this time in life was peppered with mostly bed rest, 3+ years with not much time outdoors, my life was on occasion quite dark...this little hummer bathing showed me the way out depression

Do you by chance have custom function 'Lens drive when AF impossible' (AF4 tab) turned off? There was a lot of debate about this feature with the Mark III/IV IIRC...

Excellent thought, Ron, you are a thinking man. For a moment I thought you might have nailed it, although I have never turned the lens drive off in the past. However, my 1DX lens AF drive is on.

The way I look at it is that, unless my camera body is somehow uniquelly schmucked....
* every 1DX should exibit a slight lag when the dormancy is terminated by a servo AF application (perhaps there is also another application that starts with a lag from dormancy, just that I haven't observed it.).

* with fast approaching dark targets against a busy dark background, the situation is somewhat more difficult to recreate. First of all, few people shoot that kind of an extreme thing, particularly not with f/5.6 lenses or even f/4 ones, because the success rate is slim in the extreme. Therefore, one would have to use an f/2.8 or f/2 lens which, generally, sports people do use, but not bird photographers. However, in sports, there is nothing similar to my scenario.

I have not done any tests and in fact have only been on one real shoot using my 1dx. I was quite impressed with the results. Shooting a girl's volleyball game in a guy with questionable lighting I definitely got more keepers than last years games I shot using my 1d4. So many more keepers that a simple three game match produced at least twice the keepers I would expect from a five game match.

While this is not the definitive test I guess this puts me in the happy camper group.

Well, it was worth a shot because the way Canon describes that feature, you're 'supposed to' turn off lens drive with super-teles... I guess all I can suggest is extending the wake time, or even turning off sleep entirely.

Hmmm, you haven't shot a Hamilton Tiger-Cats night game at Ivor "Dim" Stadium.

Black uniforms and ISO 3200 1/500 f/2.8... though the jerseys do have decent contrast due to the large yellow/white numbers... but with all previous cameras (1D-1DIV) there has always been some amount of AF struggle to maintain follow focus. Hopefully I'll have a chance to give the X a good tryout during a night game at some point in the season.

Ron, I have never shot sports such as football, thus I can only imagine the unique and specific and a major difficulty of it.
