There is no trafficked forum to discuss brand differences outside the brand-specific forums. Where do you suggest one discuss these differences then? And the title of this thread is "Canon AF vs Nikon".
dpreview...invite a guy named Horshack or something like that .

shhh, not so loud, it's a secret that my handle is "horshack" on dpreview...at least until someone looks at my FM profile and sees the "My dpreview handle is Horshack" tagline.

I'm starting to repeat the AF tests on Nikon bodies. It's going to be slower going (a lot more bodies active than Canon, and a less clear lens upgrade time), but hopefully in a week or two.
The very simple tests I'm doing aren't going to be much more accurate than 'nearly as good as contrast AF' or "not nearly as good as contrast AF'. Plus it's simply center point AF on a still target. Things get too complex when subjects are moving.
Having shot a lot with the D800 and D800E, I don't think they're going to be 'nearly as good as contrast AF', but I don't have any D4 experience. But hopefully I'll have some real numbers by the end of the week.
FWIW, it's become apparent that some AF differences are just decisions the manufacturers made. For example the AF sensors are still sensors with a given dynamic range. If they 'tune' them to be better in low light they may make them less accurate in bright light, etc.
It may well be that accuracy with a still target and accuracy with moving targets have nothing to do with each other. The 7D results make me wonder about that. It wasn't very good with still targets on center point but my impression shooting it was it did better than the 5DII did with moving targets and rapidly changing focus. Although I'll third or forth what's been said above: both the 5DIII and 1Dx seem more accurate than anything I've shot with, and I've shot with most everything.
