+1
I used this lens (95%) along with 85 f1.8g (5%) with my D800 during our vacation to Mackinac Island and a couple of places in Michigan Upper Peninsula.
Could not be happier with the performance of this lens in real world, as compared to brick walls

The 1.8Gs make a great inexpensive and light trio: 28mm, 50mm & 85mm. I will say that of the three, I think the 28 is the weakest performer. That's not necessarily a knock against it. It is good for a wide prime and is miles better than the old 28mm 2.8, but the 50mm & 85mm are such strong performers (especially when you take their price into consideration).

I have all these 1.8G's and the D800E... and the 28 is not the weakest them at all.. It's one of the best wide angles I have ever used, next to the Biogon 25/2.8 (yes, the sharpest lens out of the offerings of Zeiss) and it's sharp down to the extreme corners. Very sharp! However like some wide angles, the focus plane is not straight, not flat (as if parabolic; look at the lady painter in Tim Ashley's photograph and follow the focus plane on the grass..).. After some shots at wide apertures one "learns" how to follow this plane, how to employ it properly..
The next best lenses could be the 25/2 Distagon (very impressive except the corners) and the latest 28/2.8 Elmarit (fixed hood). This Nikon for $699 is a bargain and according to the Lensrentals tests better than the 24/1.4G..

I can tell you that I have virtually welded the 28mm f/1.8G to one of my D700 bodies and the 85mm f/1.8G to another one. I cannot say enough about how much I have come to love using these two lenses. They're sharp, fast, accurate, they produce color-saturated images and they're lightweight. As a full-time photojournalist the light weight of these lenses (combined with grip-less D700s) is such a joy day in and day out.
Having always opted for the beefier and more expensive f/1.4 lenses (both Canon and Nikon) I was initially a bit hesitant on switching to more "consumer-grade" f/1.8 lenses but I wanted to lighten the load on my shoulders and gave the 85mm f/1.8G a try first and that was all I needed. When the 28mm f/1.8G came out I swiped one up and the images these two produce are stunning.
I've actually stopped, for the most part, carrying my 24-70mm f/2.8 and my 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII because, frankly, these two "cheap" alternatives produce better end results (unless you're shooting sports and need the AF speed of the zooms).
I'm not sure who is reporting issues with the 28mm f/1.8G but I can tell you that in the real world this thing is stellar.

I did have focus problems with my 28mm 1.8G. I ended up sending it back. The problem was that it would focus accurately when I was close to the subject but as I was moving away it would progressively back focus more and more. I used it on a D700 and never had any issues with any of my other lenses. (24-70, 70-200, 85 1.4,)
My initial impression of the 28mm 1.8G wasn't very good. The lens feels plasticky and not very solid. Still I think it is an okay lens. It makes a light travel companion. So I will probably buy another one and hope I get a good lens.
