Thanx Jason. I installed the firmware update this morning, and see some improvement. It's useable on stationary subjects now, not sure about IF shots. It's overcast here today, so further tests will have to wait for better conditions.

Hey, regarding your 500 mk II and teleconvertor problem. I've been using my 600mm mk II for about two weeks now, but yesterday I got it out to go birding, put the 1.4x III on it and it wouldn't auto focus at all, made noise but couldn't get a lock. Took the teleconvertor off and went bare glass for the rest of the day, but after getting home I only had a couple photos that were in focus, most were a little off and I even notices some ghosting like appearance in some of the back grounds. After your episode do you think it could be the camera or the lens? Really not wanting to ship that big boy to Canon. Going to try and borrow a friends body tomorrow for some testing.

Look at the exif - the tc should show as more mm. If shooting a full frame body the mm should show as 840. If not, it's the tc. If it does show, give Canon repair a call. They are very helpful.

Just re-read your post. If it's not working bare - give Canon a call. They may even pick up the shipping cost ~ R

For whatever it is worth, I tried both the 1.4X Mark II and Mark III TCs on the classic 500mm f/4.0 IS. I couldn't tell that much of a difference, if any in optical performance between the two in real life shooting. I know Jim (jcolwell) did a comparison under more controlled conditions and he reported a slight difference in CA. The newer TC is better that respect than its predecessor. The improvement, according to Canon, is more in the AF speed and accuracy and that can be realized in the Mark II superteles. BTW, I am using the Mark III TCs now.
As I mentioned in several threads related to the Mark III TC usage, according to the official Canon info, you need to mount the Mark III TC on the lens first before mounting the combo on your camera. Mounting the TC on your body first followed by mounting the lens on it may not result in the full capacity of the combo. To what extent it is true or not, or whether it also applies to the Mark II TCs, I am not sure either but when I found out, I have been following the method that Canon recommends religously.

or whether it also applies to the Mark II TCs
I've mounted my Mark II TCs on my 500mm f/4 in every possible permutation and never found it to make a difference. I don't have a Mark III TC or a Mark II SuperTele, but I'm betting the order of mounting will make no difference with those either.

John,
You are free to do whatever pleases you. But I really would like to squeeze as much out of the combo as I can, whether it is real or perceived, I figured it won't hurt to do the mounting sequence as suggested by Canon here: http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/product/lenses/efmarkiiiextenders.do. Click on the "Key benefits" tab. Maybe it does or maybe it doesn't make any difference and indeed I used to do it whatever way it was more convenient for me to do so back then but after reading about it, the heck why not put in the effort and do it the suggested way? For sure there is no harm in doing so. I remembered reading and getting the information from another similar article about that particular tip but this is what I could find at this moment.
