While that's all nice and good, I think the argument here is that this functionality shouldn't require an additional accessory.

I tend to agree.

Monito, you are still missing the point that the Rebels have a capability that is absent from the other cameras, and which is quite useful to those who shoot at night. What is unfortunate is not that Canon included that feature in a camera whose users generally don't need it (though that statement itself is debatable), but rather that they neglected to include this feature is presumably more sophisticated cameras whose users would be more likely to benefit from it. While that may not matter to you (or you may prefer workarounds over actual features) it does matter to lots of us who shoot in the dark.

I wasn't referring to intervalometers, but the fact that other manufacturers have incorporated them into their cameras suggests that there is no real technical barrier. Again, it would be a capability that Canon could include that would provide benefit to users. Ignoring features of value to users in order to protect a market for a separate device is done at a company's own peril.
