I guess the point I was trying to make was, simply having a box doesn't mean the lens is or will be in better condition. It may provide an ease of mind, but if the seller isn't communicating by providing accurate, honest description, I'm not sure how having a box change will that outcome.
This! I've yet to take a sharp picture with a box tho there are those here who believe I might
have some measure of success with a coke bottle. Carry on, kids.

As usual, I completely agree with what da Monkey speaks here, however I have to be a good boy scout and tell the truth... I keep most of my boxes and manuals and OEM candy to present a prettier package to potential buyers if ever I go to sell something down the road (something I've done more than a few times over the years)...
Heck, I even kept the shipping box the 300/f2.8VR came in. That says something... likely that I need my head read. But TM's right, it doesn't do anything else for me except take up space.

So, I've bought one Nikon refurb'd lens over the years. The "box" is a generic brown box with a Nikon sticker on it...save it? Is it worth anything to a prospective purchaser to KNOW the equipment is Nikon USA refurb'd (i.e., they WILL work on it)?

I keep every box for every piece of equipment, but have lost a few over the years. Sold a 105mm VR and couldn't find the box, but it didn't effect the selling price. Found the box 3 months later, buyer didn't want it.
I think the box and all the paperwork is important if you plan to get top dollar for your used gear.

After 30 years of shooting, I give a dam about a box.
I can see with my own eyes if there is fungi on an element..
I can feel the actions of the unit. (as I've been feeling that practically my whole adult life)
I can see the wear on the aperture blades when cycled...
I'm either buying a lens to use, or I'm a guy who just collects equipment and pretty boxes.
You either know what your holding and testing when you look at it, and know your used price for that item going in.. or you don't.
But to 86 a sale because I guy didn't have a BOX?
Jesus, dogs and cats will be mating on the streets soon.

My Mother, who is 90 years old now, living alone, has 3 deep freeze units, 2 regular refrigerators and an entire cold storage full of food. I affectionately call this the "Food Museum".
I now have a new term to add to the vernacular of my everyday..
