Thanks so much guys - I REALLY appreciate the comments and the feedback. I touched up the shadows in #4 and reposted that one.
Love the idea of using a softbox vs the umbrella. Being in the desert, we deal with wind a LOT and I think that would be helpful. I definitely want to play with it some more. I was mostly experimenting with this shoot so I'm happy I got a few that are usable.
I totally forgot to answer the question about my senior rep program. I chose 5 girls in total...2 from one local high school and 3 from the bigger high school. They are getting their session and pro hair/makeup for free (normally $200). I'll be making up rep cards for them (sort of like a business card, but with their images, my info, and a small discount or deal for the person who is handed the rep card) and for each senior that books and pays for a session with me, the rep who referred them gets a $100 credit toward their own portrait package. So basically, they are my inside link to the high schools and will be marketing for me both there and on Facebook. This is my first year trying a program like this, but I'd really love to focus more on seniors so I figured I'd do a trial run this year with the local high schools, and if it's successful, I'll consider expanding it to the Vegas area next year. ...Show more →
Mind if I steal your idea...I am way off in California.

I am impressed with your OCF shots. They are definitely my style.
For portable softboxes, check out Westcott Apollo 28 or the Apollo Orb. The latter gives off a bit more punch. If you want soft quality light, the Westcott JS Apollo 50 inch is worth a look, but I rarely use it for on location shoots. All three above can be set up and collapsed like umbrellas.

Thanks guys. More questions for you...that 50" Apollo softbox...is that something I could use with a strobe in studio? I have a room in my new house that is completely unused and empty right now and I'm seriously considering converting it into a studio/office space. It's not a huge area but definitely big enough. I love equipment that can pull double duty, so if that could work with my OCF and in studio, I'd be ready to hit the buy button.

Yes, a strobe can fit in any of the Westcott softboxes I mentioned. I can fit my Einstein 640 in it with no problems. Do you want prevent light from spilling all over the place, especially on the background? These softboxes are great for that due to the feathering around the edges. I personally use a 60" umbrella most of the time since I'm one who likes to shoot environmental portraits a lot.

Get a beauty dish if you want some sort of crisp lighting to show the edges and curves of a person's body characteristics. It is not soft. Also invest in a heavy light stand for this.
Get a medium softbox if you want to light up a single person or two. It provides nice sidelighting with some shadows. Get a large softbox (50 inch) if you really softer, window light quality.
Definitely get a convertible umbrella so you can reflect off it or shoot through it. I prefer the 60 inch. Usually 30 to 40 bucks.
Really depends on what kind of lighting you desire since light modifiers will mold light differently. But the larger the light source is, the softer the light quality.

Thank you so much guys...this is really helpful! I think I tend to prefer softer lighting, but then again, I didn't realize I'd enjoy OCF until I tried it. Maybe I should pick up a few toys to experiment with.

Don't mislead.....you put a diffuser on the BD and it is pretty darn soft.

Yeah well, I suppose one can put a sock over the 22" Beauty Dish like the one you provided a link to, it becomes a small softbox.
But compare that to the Westcott Apollo 28", or the Westcott Apollo Orb 43", or even the Westcott Apollo 50" softbox, that 22" Beauty Dish with the diffuser sock over it still won't produce softer lighting than the softboxes I recommended.
