Do you know for a fact that she likes and more so, is willing to travel with a DSLR, even a smaller one ?

Not to say its a bad camera, but for the same money you could spend on a lens for it, there are a good number of smaller/lighter CSC's such as a Sony NEX or m4/3 system, or even something like a Sony RX100.

Again, not knocking a DSLR, but for many less than enthusiast shooters, such as my own Mother, an optical finder is not a feature they are looking for, and in fact the LCD is the

So for AU$500, what would you recommend?

Asked her what she'd prefer.
She said the lens.
So 15-85mm it is.
She is after a good bag.
The Tamrac one she has just slips off her shoulder.
Any ideas?
It only needs to be big enough for the camera + lens.

What about the Zeiss they were just talking about in the other thread? The 35-70 or the 28-85.

Does she like to manually focus (ie, does she like photography) or is she the snap-shot kinda gal?

No chance that she'd want to manually focus.

Is your mom artistic? Sounds like she might be from buying a DSLR from you. My mom would never even try to use a DSLR.

Here's an interesting third option, get her a 35mm or 50mm equivalent F1.4 or F1.8 prime. Limitations make us more creative. I've personally found that zooms often make me take much more boring photos or give me creative paralysis.

If she uses a camera phone now, she has more experience taking photos using a prime than a zoom.

Also, have her read this: http://digital-photography-school.com/8-tips-to-take-better-travel-pictures

Ah, OK. Well how about a Contax N converted to Canon then? They do AF.

'I'd go Tamron and get the 17-50/2.8.'
+1, eq of 25-75mm, wide enough to long enough. Cheap but very good. Any cheap bag at the mall bag shop. And, ah, such is life...

Don't forget Canon uses a 1.6x crop so its actually more like a 28-80 equiv. Splitting hairs on the long end of the zoom, but every mm on the wide end can represent a rather meaningful difference
