I rarely buy new gear and although the local camera shop is decent, their selection of used lenses is minimal. I'd say I buy more gear on E-Bay than anywhere else. Second most used would the the Buy and Sell board here. I've also had success on craigslist. I've also found gear on other photo websites. Were I to buy new I'd definitely go with B&H from whom I've bought two computers. And KEH is always worth checking out since they have an extensive selection of MF glass. I have them keeping an eye out for a particular lens at the moment.
I've never had a single problem buying used gear from any source... just lucky I guess. Of course, the feedback mechanism on the B&S board is worth gold. I love dealing with established members of this site.

I'm a die hard B&H guy, but when the D4 came out I was on 3 lists, including B&H. Not one of them was able to deliver a D4 to me. After a great heads up from a friend who lives down south, I gave Don at Murphy's a call and had my D4 3 days later. So Don is now my "go to" guy when it comes to gear.

If I know what I want, I go B&H. If I'm not sure and need to test things out I go to the B&H store and get it there. Since I live in NY I pay sales tax either way.

Usually either b&h or Adorama, and sometimes at the Exchange on base if they have what i'm looking for. Other than that it's here or another more local site i'm a member of.

I've bought an SB-600 and recently 24-70 used from lensrental.com good prices and condition as promised. Would welcome any other opinions on buying used from them.

B&H usually if I'm buying something that is not considerably less used. For other items I usually buy from the FM B/S forum. As stated above some members sell used items for relatively the same price as B&H so if that's the case I'd rather buy brand new.

I've had just 3 new vehicles in the last 35 yrs, I'm beginning to see a pattern here...
let someone else take the New 'hit'. I make money with my gear, so I can pay it off
quicker goin' the used route....and usually offer a 'deal' when it's time to move on.
Adorama/Amazon/B&H/Samy's when I absolutely HAVE to have it (28 & 85 f1.8G's for instance)
Exactly the same as 'monkey. The only gear I buy new is what's new enough that I can't get it from the B&S boards, or wait for it to show up there. Specifically, the new 85G and 28G.

Yup. For this wedding season, we bought three lenses and two full frame cameras from the forums here, and they're all we used, aside from a factory demo 50 we bought from Cameta, which is also where we bought our first crop camera. There's no way I'm ever buying new when used gear is available.

Looks like most everyone buys on line alot. My question would be will your buying habits change if the feds ever get through a bill to force all online sellers to collect sales tax on online purchases and what would be the affect on sellers like KEH, B&H, and Adaroma. Another potential gift from our Government.

I've been buying used off the internet since I first discovered rec.photography.marketplace on USENET. No way could I afford the gear I have if I bought it new.

Sadly, here in the woods, the nearest brick and mortar camera shop is ... well, not near. On the other hand, I have used B&H confidently for 30 years or more and never been unhappy. I highly recommend them.

no because for any gear other than bottom end DSLR kits, I don't have local options. I use Amazon Prime for everything I can for convenience as much as price. I work long hours and with Amazon I have it by Friday for the weekend project. I shop local stores for specialty items if they have quality, knowledgable, service. That's hard to find these days.

Local dealers rarely have what I'm looking for. I recently bought a Think Tank bag, an Arca C1 Cube head, and I'm considering an RRS 24L tripod. No local dealer carries this. Heck, I don't know of anyone who even sells RRS/Kirk plates.
I used to go to local stores to buy film, but I haven't shot a roll in several years and recently threw out a large trash bag of it as I emptied my film fridge and shelves. That stuff was just taking up space and would never see use. These days the only reason I go to a local store is to buy ink and paper. Even then their paper selection is pretty iffy; they have everything pretty much in small sizes up to 13x19, but 17x22/25 or 24x36... not much. They usually do carry ink for my printers - Epson 3800, 7900 and lo and behold: Cone K7 for my Epson 7600. I'll discover I'm out and I need more NOW. It's worth the 45 min or so it takes to go shopping for it.
When it comes to cameras and lenses I just go order it. Takes a few min, as opposed to running or phoning around trying to find a store that stocks it, then go pick it up and discover it's not what you asked for. But they can order it! Then I can take ANOTHER trip to go pick it up as opposed to order and have it dropped at my doorstep. Not to mention no local store stocks the stuff I'm likely to buy, just a lot of Tamron and a few consumer zooms. So it's a waste of time to even check.
Oh, and I needed an RRS B2 Pro clamp for the C1 Cube head. No local "pro" store has this stuff.
