p.2 #1 · Compact but fast vintage alt glass recommendations? To adapter-mount on mFT

As an m4/3 user, I think that if you are shooting alt, there are better platform out there than m4/3: GXR-M, NEX, to name a few. m4/3 excel in its compact native lens. The crop factor, higher pixel density, lack of focus peaking, etc, work against it.

Fast-ish lenses I like under $500

Yashica ML 21mm f/2.8 (Shaaaarp, low distortion!, nice colors, no CA)

Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AIS (low distortion, very sharp, low CA)
Super Takumar 28mm f/3.5 (very creative, very sharp)

Rokkor 35mm f/2.8 (incredibly sharp, high micro-contrast, great colors, No CA IIRC)

nFD 50/1.4 (sharpest 50mm at exactly f/1.4 on the planet)
Super-Multicoated-Takumar 50/1.4 (creative "painterly" bokeh, and very sharp)
C/Y Zeiss 50/1.7 (creative highly defined "bright" bokeh, sharp)
C/Y Zeiss 50/1.4 (nice 3D-ishness, sharp, low CA)
Minolta AF 50/1.4 (super colorful, very sharp, low CA)
Minolta AF 50/2.8 Macro (Super colorful, very sharp, 1:1 magnification)
Voigtlander Norton 50/1.5 (very sharp!!! compact when mounted [M39], neat shape)

FDn 85/1.2L with internal dirt (super bokeh, very sharp, with internal dirt $500 is possible and it's really easy to disassemble and clean this lens!)
C/Y Zeiss 85/1.4 (Zeissishness!)

Tamron SP AF or MF 90/2.5 (Not the 2.8, very sharp, 1:1 mag, great colors)

Nikkor 105/2.5 (Zeiss-like 3D-ishness, very sharp, good colors)
Nikkor 105/2.8 (1:1 macro, very sharp, good colors, low CA)

Canon FD 135/2.5 (Very unique rendering WO and very sharp)
C/Y Zeiss 135/2.8 (Zeiss 3D-ishness, good colors)
Sears 135/2.8 Macro (Creative SF rendering possible, very sharp, lightweight)

There are many others but they're either not compact-ish, over $500, or I've forgotten them. Hopefully the later is only temporary.

aleksanderpolo, besides being off topic that doesn't even seem to make sense. What? I'm lost.

Don't the C-mounts work pretty well on M4/3s? I know the ultra-wides vignette pretty heavily, but it seems like the longer lenses worked well. Some of them are fast. cheap, and have loads of character.

No, they don't. There seems to be a cult following who claim they do. But they're full of shite IMHO! There's only as tiny number of C-mount lenses that will fit down into the throat of the µ4/3 mount - as the adapter demands. Of those 30% of them hit the shutter curtain and 85% of them don't cover the sensor.

There's a couple worth modifying or that just work but for the most part we can all safely avoid C-Mount lenses - unless tinkering in your thing. And really, of the ones that are worth it, there are 135 mount lenses to match them for the same or less money.

I guess it would also be worth it if you needed to match footage from your film (movie) camera in a professional arena. This would save one from having to scan in all the footage in order to CG and Comp with.

Ah, thanks, Bif. I was remembering incorrectly. What about lenses from super 16 cameras? Are they at all useable?

Well, that's a film format. But if you mean from the PL, Bay, or Arri mount cameras and not the ones that use c-mount again then I think there are adapters to µ4/3 but they're expensive. Like around $300. And I dunno everything of course but I've never seen a "compact" lens in Arri or PL. When a regular 16mm camera is converted to Super-16 the image circle needs to be bigger because of course the frame size is wider. So if the lens covers the Super16 frame then it might have a better chance of covering the µ4/3 frame. There's still a big difference tho. A Super16 frame is 12.52mm wide and a µ4/3 "frame" is 17.3 mm. And before you ask, Ultra-16 is actually smaller than Super16. Some B4-mount lenses might have a better chance.

"Remembering" from reading forums, is probably difficult at best cuz there's always someone (even me at one point) talking out their rumps about the wonders of c-mount on µ4/3. So it's really easy to think there's a lot of good compatible models out there.

If you're interested in lenses like these, old film mounts and so forth I think http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/forum.php is a pretty good place to start looking. There's guys there who know lots more than me! Just be carful of the rump-talkers.
