I thought so too. Someone told me that they are called banana spiders, but not sure. They are huge but benign. They make the best spider webs that I've ever seen too and the webs can get huge.

edit:

Someone at another forum that I posted this found out the real name of it; it's called a garden spider. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argiope_aurantia
