Sitting in the middle of my tens of thousands of dollars of high quality Canon and Nikon lens this little fellow is a bit of strange in a good way. The lens is only $200 and yet it is more then quick, very sharp, and a ball of fun to use. Here we are comparing it to items costing ten times as much and more and making silly statements like it isn't quite as quick and only f2.8, etc. Goodness my fellow FM'ers this thing is simply incredible, I love it and have yet to find anyone who really used it that doesn't. My only question is who at Canon headquarters screwed up. A legitimate performance bargain from Canon, they slipped up because based upon their new pricing models for others lens they could have thrown a $500+ price tag on this one and the fan boys would have sucked it up. Marvels like this and the manual focus wonders from Samyang/Rokinon, and the new $200 4/3 and NEX miracles from Sigma are enough to restore ones faith that excellent performance engineering doesn't have to cost zillions. Hope your all enjoying this as much as I am.

I have no problems with this lens, a few weeks ago I used it for two days straight for assorted types of people shots, close-in portraits, group shots, etc. and I used it this last weekend for a sunset/people scene and I was never disappointed with it.
The bokeh quality is typical for this type of lens, not great but not bad. It works well for video too, though as you can see from the stuff I've posted on youtube, MF takes a bit of getting used to.

well said. Actually I would pay $500 for it, at least to try out the little devil. It works very well for me. It is a keeper. Time to sell 35L actually

Ive had the 40 for about a month now and love it. Super sharp and the size makes it a very fun lens. Are you seriously considering selling your 35 L? I was thinking the same thing. I have the 35 and it's probably my least used lens. The plan in the back of my mind was to sell the 35 and my 5d mark ii and get the mark iii. Any opinions? ...Show more →

The Mark III is amazing in my opinion. I think if you don't need F2, you will be better served by 40mm, my $0.02. 35L is too old and have known shortcomings. I hear 35 II is coming also.

The 40 is great but it it's no 35L or 50L. For me it fills a niche gap for a light-weight kit with the 5D2 and 270EX.
I agree it's sharp and I have been pleasantly surprised by it. That said both the L's do a better job in my view. The flexibility that 1.2 and 1.4 give over 2.8 isn't something I could do without. I'm keeping all three lenses.

According to Rodger at Lens Rentals, the new 40 and the new 70-300L are the most accurate focusing lenses canon has ever made if used with the new 5d3. I am looking to get one just for its size and price.

thinkpadfans -- Great thread! Thanks for all the terrific views of Washington outdoors! (More please) Loving your imagining.
I think you have convinced me to make the 40/2.8 my next purchase. I've been toying with the idea of a used 35/2 -- but why? After seeing all the great results people have been getting it seems absolutely stupid to buy the 35/2, doesn't it, even if they were the same price. (No offense to 35/2 owners! I know it's a stop faster and a decent lens - I might still get one.)
