Just bought a D700 for $1675 w/ <11k clicks on it. If the seller told me it was brand new I would believe him. I am new to Nikon so I can't recommend anything, but if you do want a cheaper FX camera, D700 is a great camera

...The information we don't have is how much value the OP places on each feature/benefit. I like that if I want to travel small and light, I can simply remove the grip from the D700. Can't do that with the D3. I like that I can do one-speedlight CLS with the D700's pop-up commander. Can't do that with the D3. I like how the D700 can take an EN-EL3e, an EN-EL4a, or even AA batteries in a pinch. Can't do that with the D3. I like how I can impress girls with the D700's virtual horizon... okay, the D3 can do that too.

I really like dual card slots...have them in my D7000, and i dont really use it for the redundancy feature, but more for overflow so i dont have to worry about switching cards so often...i like the 100% VF too...I've got a D300 grip already, and D300 batteries (which both work with the D700)....so honestly i might just end up going D700....but we'll have to see....the move to FX is a whole nother animal....i gotta stay the same with my range of lenses...right now i just have a 55 ais, a 50 1.8, and a 70-200 VR that'll do FX...everything else is DX...which isn't TERRIBLE, b/c i'll still be using the D7000...but i gotta at least pick up a 17-35 or a 24-70 at the same time....so i guess there goes the D3 idea!! haha...Show more →
I'm with you on this one! I too have a D300 and all batteries and that's what pushed me to D700, it also helps that I got my D700 for a ridiculous deal -- all that said I say go with a D700 and use the savings for glass
We vote D700. In fact, we bought a couple from here back in the spring, and have used them on several weddings and photo journeys since then. I briefly considered a D3, but the advantages would have been negated by the higher price, lack of a sensor cleaner, and added heft. The D700 feels good, though it's still heavy.
