p.1 #1 · Where are the bathing hummers?

I was so inspired by the photos of the little hummers bathing away, and when I saw the setup photos, I knew I had to do it! So I went to Lowe's that very day, set up my hummer bath complete with pump and carefully selected rocks. I have lots of hummingbirds that frequent my feeders, so I put the bath right by one of the feeders. After one week, I have no bathers : ( Oh, they come and eat at my diner, but will not take a bath so I can photograph them. Any suggestions on how to get them to "clean up their act?"
Thanks!
Jane

Try adding tiny little shower curtains for privacy. Sorry, but this is as close to help as I can give... ~ Ron

I think you need to use shakels. That's why the photo are always crops above the legs :-}

Post a shot of your setup, and I may be able to offer some suggestions.

Thanks for your offer of help, Tony! Here are photos of my set up, not great shots, just done in a hurry so you can see them. The last image is how it would look if only a hummer were there!!
I have not posted photos before, so I hope I do it correctly. If it doesn't work, I'll try again.

Really, thanks so much. I am brand new to the forum, and you are all so awe inspiring with your work. I know I can learn so much here!

Oops, images are too big. Sorry guys, I was trying to hurry so I could get some answers. Thoughts on how to size the images so they are easier to see?? I use LR4. Thanks

A balcony is a poor choice. Not only does it increase the risk of hummers flying into windows, but they would also view those railings as an obstacle to making a fast escape.

They prefer a more open space where they can see it is safe to land and safe to fly away in a number of directions. You could also try attaching a bit of green shrubbery (real or fake) above the fountain. That gives them a safe place to perch before or after bathing.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me with my setup. I'm going to carry it down to my yard this morning and reassemble it in an open area. The woods where the hummers live is at the edge of my yard, so it should be easy for them to find and they will feel free. I so appreciate your advice. I'll let you know if this works!!

If you build it they will come. But I agree that the balcony is a poor choice.

It took me three years to get it right, but finally with the help of Imagemaster, I got it right. My Rubies take a bath at 05:30. Much earlier then I would like....
