p.1 #1 · Do you NEED a laptop or can you live with an iPad?
I am looking to shoot tethered on location and I need to have a place to put my portfolio when presenting to clients. I have a MBP retina on order and I'm considering canceling and just getting a new iPad. Is it awkward to present your portfolio on a laptop? I had a MPB 17" but I didn't feel that I used it on location for anything other than a viewer. Will the new iPad suffice?

From what I have been able to find out, the only way to get images onto an iPad are iTunes or syncing somehow other than a traditional tethered set up. That means some redneck engineering to put it all together. My understanding is that generally folks shoot tethered to a PC/laptop and then that folder is shared via wifi to the iPad. Basically around your elbow to get to your nose.
Short version: no, you can't shoot tethered directly to an iPad.

Hi,
I use an iPad to view images from the shoot. "Short version: no, you can't shoot tethered directly to an iPad." Not entirely true!
Use the camera connection kit (not some "Redneck" hack). You can keep it attached and images will show up on the iPad, but you have to manually download them.
There is also the Eyfi pro card SD only that will transmit the photos to the iPad. I haven't tried this as I don't have an SD card slot(damn you D700!!!) but a quick google/bing search will show up quite a few people whom are using it. Just make sure that you only send the small jpegs not the raw files(faster you know.).
I attach it to my D700 after I've composed and shot (for architecture and portraits). It's been great for checking for things in the frame that shouldn't be there, as well as your cropping.
I've also used it to do some minimal adjustments, resize and email to the client. it's been a great tool.
That being said there are times I wish I had a full-blown laptop, but with the weight savings and the ability to pass it to the client so they could zoom in and check the shot on the spot, it's been great.
BTW I just got a macBook Air for my daughter (going off to college) and I'm really impressed with the weight and speed. So If you must have a laptop I would suggest an Air.

I'd run out of room on an iPad in no time at all. Unless you're shooting jpegs exclusively, an iPad is just not the right tool. Stick with your MBP, which is better all the way around. I shoot tethered into a MBP using C1 and couldn't be happier.

I have the camera connection kit, and it works great as you describe. I have used it this way myself. However, I do not consider that "tethered." I think of tethered as "I shoot, images show up." I concur that the camera connection kit is NOT redneck.

I have two devices I shoot directly to, and or use them as a viewer, cruise the internet, edit documents & photos. One is Android based the other is full blown Windows 7. Granted they each have their use and do not replace my desktop machine at home.
