Fred, if you are going to Tanzania and/or Kenya, I am afraid you may need a longer lens than the 500mm, even on a 1.3X body and a 1.4X TC and that's based on my personal first-hand experience. I am not sure about other countries though.
Cheaper to add a 7D to the mix than go for even more FL as nice as that would be. 7D + 500 + 1.4 gives some great reach and will put more pixels on a subject than 5D III + 500 +2x and only a few % less than 1D IV + 500 + 2x. 7D has 1.33x the reach of 1D IV, 1.5x the reach of 5D III and 1.6x the reach of 1D X when FL limited.
I would always have two cameras and lenses on the go anyway.

Man, I am still struggling with whether to upgrade my 500L to the 500L II or the 600L II. Even with my 7D, I feel like I could use more reach. But the loss of weight would help with travel and certainly with handholdablity. Sigh.

Well I'm new to the forums but have been lurking awhile. Thought I would add that I just placed my pre-order for the 600mm MkII from Camera Canada. I talked to them yesterday and they had 7 on pre-order, so hopefully with B&H getting a shipment they will too, will keep informed.

Yes, I wanted to travel light and bring the 500II, 1.4xIII, 5DIII and 7D ranging from 500mm to 1120mm.

I understand that. Then I would suggest to bring a Kenko 1.4X and tape the pin of that TC and you can use that in combo with your Canon 1,4X TC to get an effective 2X multiplier in a pinch for more semi-static target. That generic TC does weigh much and is small enough to stay within your light travel mode. Again the situation in Serengeti and Masai Mara, you have to stay on the path and you will find out that the action is mostly far, far away. You have to be really lucky to encounter action close to your vehicle and I had better luck in Vegas in that respect . At any rate, enjoy!

I use a Kenko 1.4X TC stacked with a Canon 1.4X TC Mk II with my Canon 500 f/4 Mk I on a Canon 7D and get autofocus on the outer foucs point without having to tape any pins. Works great.

The long wait and thrill of the hunt seems to be over, reality has sunk in….the charge card notice was emailed!…wow. It would have better to be holding (hugging) the lens then see the bill!
