I find the ship to be a very distracting element. I know that composition is a personal taste, and I don't know the kind of feel you are looking for.

The use of negative space is somewhat lost in this image...

Negative space works when it draws the viewer's eye into the subject.
In this case a large expanse of negative space gives the impression of openness and solitude.
However, as I said, I don't know the kind of feel the OP wanted to evoke.

Socrates version of your image IMHO is fantastic. I love the minimalist approach and this subject and tone lends itself very well in that direction. I would go so far as to even eliminate the faint horizon that is left. You could resize the canvas down to a size of your liking and the comp would work just as well.
