When you say onboard- do you mean built in to your mobo, or is it a GC you have installed?

Can you buy or borrow a graphics card to put into your rig? If you can- enable it and see if it goes away- if it does your onboard graphics are bad. Do you have anything close to your tower that could be interfering with it, electronically wise? What you are describing can look like that (and be intermittent). Check for any electronics close to any leads going into your tower and to your monitor (CRT or flat screen?). Hope this may help you with your problem.

check to make sure the settings are correct and match your monitor's requirements. If the wrong screen refresh rate is used it can cause what you are describing. Most LCD monitors use 60 Hz.

Are you using VGA (the blue one with spikies (literally had it described this way to me once) or DVI/HDMI?

VGA is an analog signal (while the others are digital) and is more susceptible to synchronization issues in the signal. If you have the same digital ports on your motherboard and monitor, I would give them a shot to see if it's any better. If not, you could always try a different VGA cable and also see if there's something nearby like power cables which might be causing interference.

Good luck!
