Seems to me that the argument about sharpness stopped down maybe not the argument that should be made against the 50 f/1.2… I am of the opinion the 1.2 should be used wide open.
Most of what I shoot is motorsports and f/1.2 would not be much use with a slow shutter speed…1/250 to maybe 1/60… in the middle of the day but at an event like the Petit Le Mans which runs late into the evening, I believe it would be a great walk around lens on a Full Frame in the Paddock and Vendor Village after dark…shot wide open…
OMG! I about fell in love. It made some wonderful pictures. Grrrrrrr. I could almost (not quite) junk my other 50s and use this. Luckily the price is up there high enough and my needs low enough that I can get by without it.
I don't think it's strictly a wide-open lens. I practiced with it up to f/5.6 and it was awesomely sharp. I was amazed how good it was stopped down between 1.4 and 2.0. But even beyond, it is one of the finest 50s I've ever shot.
Thanks CPS, for making me love this lens (new stock -- no date code).
I love shooting my at F1.8 - F2 and at 1.2 and 1.4 when the shot calls for it. Always performs and if it does miss focus it was my error or the crappy 5D II autofocus system
