Capturing the skimmer hitting a submerged object was a nice surprise for me, I’m shore it did not enjoy the ride. I had to crop that photo a lot and with the TC the quality is a little lower than I like yet the moment is well worth sharing.
I took these while sitting on a dock in the blazing host sun of our current heat wave on Saturday at the Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area on Long Island, New York. It was late morning and the floating dock is down in the channel sheltered from the nice breeze that had made the rest of our outing bearable. The joy of watching the skimmers do their thing allowed us to spend about 20 minutes taking images before calling it quits for the day. When I got to my car I drank ½ of 2 quart canteen in one gulp. Then went under the shade of my tail gate and broke down my gear before heading home.
Well done Morris. It's the last 2 for me too. BTW, I lived in long Beach for 2+ years back in the mid 70's, but had gotten out of photography during that time ~ Ron

An excellent set, Morris.
I've never seen skimmers at work, but occasional photos of them (like these) impress the heck out of me.
And your image of it hitting an object is wonderful. I've wondered about that before. I guess skimmers occasionally die from broken necks if the object is too big and unmovable.
