There are two green herons that hang out at the pond behind my house. They are becoming more tolerant of my presence.

Quite possible. I am not sure if there is a way to distinguish a male from a female. There are a couple that hang out by the pond. About 5 miles away there is some low lying areas around the lake and I have counted up to 5 in that area.
