p.1 #1 · Not ospreys

I recently visited Rutland Water to see if I could photograph the ospreys that are nesting there. Unfortunately I couldn't get anywhere near close enough, the population of these birds is still very low in England and they are quite rightly heavily protected. I didn't come away from my visit completely empty handed however...

No.1: A Little Owl was very obliging in posing for me (shame about the sky, it would have made a much better shot had it been blue). These owls are not native to the UK, they were introduced in the 19th Century and have adapted to their new home very well.

No.2 and 3: This Great Crested Grebe was nesting in front of a hide from which the osprey nest can be observed, consequently the hide is pretty busy with people coming and going, it didn't seem to be disturb the Grebe however.

No.4 and 5: This Nothern Shoveler has a somewhat goofy look in my view.

C&C welcome,

Very nicely done Paul. I like the owl, but the grebes are extra nice. I think I would call 3 a Daffy Duck... ~ Ron

Any time you can come away with an owl surprise it is a good day. The grebe's are super and the shoveler fits the bill nicely

Great set of images.

I am assuming that your shoveler was a female.

Thank you for sharing.

Nice job on this set. Too bad about the Osprey but I would be happy with these.

An Owl is better than an Osprey.
Those Grebe eggs should be hatching soon.
You would look goofy too if you had a beak that large.

You're so right Ron, I was getting my cartoon characters mixed up.

Thanks for the comment.

Actually I think the shoveler is a male that is nearing the end of its molt into eclipse plummage.

Paul.

Tony, you rumbled me, but how did you know I look goofy?!

Thanks for your comment,

Paul.
